M. Tennis Falls Short at Army, 4-3

WEST POINT, N.Y. -- The Fairleigh Dickinson men's tennis team saw its three-match win streak come to a tough end when it fell on the road to Army, 4-3, on Tuesday. With the victory, the Black Knights improve to 13-5 on the season, while the Knights fall to 5-5 overall.

The difference in the match came in doubles, as Army won two of the three matches to claim the doubles' point. FDU's lone victory came at No. 1, with sophomore Arvis Berzins (Adazi, Latvia/Riga Language School) and senior Ibrahim Shams (Cairo, Egypt/Manor House) claiming an 8-4 victory over Asika Isoh and Harrison McCormick.

In singles, each side claimed three victories. Berzins stayed hot at No. 1 after defeating Isoh, 6-3, 6-3. Senior Yuri Gircheno was leading 4-3 in the third set when his opponent, Alex Van Velzer, retired in their No. 3 match. Gricheno won the first set, 7-5, before dropping the second set, 6-3. Senior Peter Skvarka (Banska Bystrica, Slovakia/Gymnazium J.G. Tajovskeho) also needed three sets to win at No. 5 over Henry Jang-Milsten, 6-2, 3-6, 6-0.

Shams and freshman Markus Sjoberg (Tyreso, Sweden/Varmdo Gymnasium) were defeated in straight sets at No. 2 and No. 6, while senior Mark Hemy (Suffolk, England/Ipswich School) was defeated in three sets at No. 4 by Harrison McCormick, 3-6, 6-4, 6-3.

“We fought hard in singles play today against a strong Army team,” Head Coach Jonathan Buchman said. “However, not winning the doubles point was the difference.”

The Knights will return to action on Saturday, April 6 when they host NJIT at the FDU Tennis Courts, with first serve scheduled for 11 a.m.
