HAMDEN, Conn. -- The Fairleigh Dickinson men's team won its third straight Northeast Conference match after hanging on to defeat Quinnipiac, 4-3, on Saturday. With the victory, the Knights improve to 5-4 (3-1 NEC) on the season, while the Bobcats fall to 4-10, (1-2 NEC) overall.
FDU took an early 1-0 lead after winning two of the three doubles matches to claim the doubles' point. Sophomore
Arvis Berzins (Adazi, Latvia/Riga Language School) and senior
Ibrahim Shams (Cairo, Egypt/Manor House) squeaked by at No. 1 with an 8-6 victory over Fahoum Fahoum and Garrett Lane, and seniors
Mark Hemy (Suffolk, England/Ipswich School) and Peter Skvara crushed Alex Lazerowich and Corey Morgenstern at No. 2, 8-6.
In singles, the Knights won three of the six matches to win the match, including a thrilling three-set victory by Hemy at No. 4 to give FDU the victory. He defeated Luke Roser, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 to break the three-all tie.
“Our captain Mark (Hemy) rose to the challenge and captured the win,” Head Coach
Jonathan Buchman said. “He played great under pressure, and I had no doubt he would prevail.”
Berzins did not lose a game during his straight-set victory over Sebastian Barbero at No. 1. Skvara also won in straight sets at No. 6, defeating Alex Lazerowich, 6-4, 6-3.
“We found a way to get this conference win today,” Buchman said. “Arvis (Berzins), Peter (Skvarka) and Mark (Hemy) came up big for us, winning in both doubles and singles. Although it was a good win, we have a lot of work to do.”
FDU will return to action on Tuesday, April 2 when it travels to West Point, N.Y. to take on Army at 3:30 p.m.
