Box Score

HACKENSACK, N.J. -- The Fairleigh Dickinson women's basketball team lost a hard-fought contest with Stony Brook, 68-58, Thursday night at Stratis Arena. With the victory, the Seawolves improve to 3-2 on the season, while the Knights fall to 0-4 overall.

Junior Amanda Andrades (Virginia Beach, Va./Princess Anne) led FDU with a career-high 16 points and dished out four assists, while sophomore Kelsey Cruz (Chester, Va./Lloyd C. Bird) came off the bench to add 13 points.

The Knights took an early 13-9 lead before the Seawolves answered with seven straight to take a 16-13 lead with 13:11 to go before halftime.

FDU fought back to tie the game at 18-18 with just under eight minutes left in the opening half, but Stony Brook would lead the rest of the opening 20 minutes, never by more than four, to go into halftime leading 29-28.

The Knights shot 42.1 percent (8-of-19) and made 10 of its 11 free throw attempts in the first half. The Seawolves shot 41.9 percent (13-of-31) and held a 14-13 edge on the boards while forcing the Knights into 10 turnovers.

Going back to the first half, FDU used a 9-2 run, capped by an Andrades' bucket, to take a 32-29 lead. But Stony Brook came back and took over the lead at 39-36 with 14:18 remaining in the contest.

Trailing by one with just under 10 minutes to go, senior Desiree Crawford (Aurora, Ontario/Cardinal Carter Catholic) was fouled as she sunk a turnaround baseline jumper. She then converted the free throw for the old-fashion-three-point play to give FDU a 47-45 advantage.

The Seawolves responded with six straight points to take the lead for good. Sophomore Brianna Thomas (Baldwin, N.Y./St. John the Baptist Diocesan) made one of two free throws to cut the deficit to 51-50, but Stony Brook was able to extend its lead back out to five.

Andrades knocked down a pair from the line, cutting the Seawolves' lead to 57-54 with 3:23 remaining, but it was the closest the Knights would come. Stony Brook's Chikilra Goodman came down and knocked down a three on the Seawolves' next possession, which proved to be the dagger, as Stony Brook stretched its lead out to 63-53 with 37 ticks left on the clock before taking the contest, 68-58.

FDU shot 52.2 percent in the second half to finish the game at 47.6 percent (20-of-42) but only converted 3-of-16 from behind-the-arc. The Seawolves just shot under 50 percent (14-of-29) over the final 20 minutes to shoot 45 percent (27-of-60) for the contest.

Stony Brook held a 32-23 advantage on the glass, including a 12-2 lead on the offensive end, which led to a 9-2 advantage in second-chance points. The Seawolves also turned the ball over 11 times while forcing the Knights into 20 miscues, resulting in a 22-13 advantage in points off turnovers.

"That was our best defensive effort of the season," Head Coach Peter Cinella said. "I am proud of the team for following the game plan so well. We did a great job of taking charges, and we really did a great job of running the offense. Amanda Andrades (Virginia Beach, Va./Princess Anne) was solid from the field, Anastasia Williams (Central Islip, N.Y./St. John the Baptist Diocesan) had some good low post buckets, and Kelsey Cruz (Chester, Va./Lloyd C. Bird) provided us with some good scoring."

Stony Brook's Sabre Proctor led all scorers with 24 points. Jessica Ogunnorin added a double-double with 14 points and a game-high 10 rebounds, while Goodman and Brittany Snow chipped in 12 and 10 points, respectively.

FDU will return to action Sunday, Nov. 24 when it hosts Columbia for a 2 p.m. tipoff at Stratis Arena.
