FLUSHING MEADOWS, N.Y. -- It was a productive day for the Fairleigh Dickinson men's tennis team on Friday as the Knights opened play at the USTA NTC Invitational in Flushing Meadows, N.Y.

Four singles players as well as three doubles teams from FDU went undefeated and are still vying for their respective flight titles. Overall, the Knights put together a 9-4 mark in singles and 3-1 in doubles play.

Seniors Yuri Gricheno (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Colegio Amorim) and Peter Skvarka (Banska Bystrica, Slovakia/Gymnazium J.G. Tajovskeho) won both of their singles matches on the day. Playing Flight D singles, Gricheno defeated Yale's Martin Svenning, 7-6(5), 2-6, 10-3 in the round of 16 and went on to a 6-2, 7-5 victory over Charlie Carrera of Saint Peter's in the quarterfinals. Skvarka had a solid day in Flight F play with a win against Sam Jang-Milsten from Army, 6-1, 6-1 in the round of 16 and took down Yale's Patrick Chase, 6-7(4), 6-2, 12-10 in the quarterfinals.

FDU had two players advance in Flight H singles with junior Dominic Devaux-Lovell (St. Lucia, West Indies/Heritage Delray Beach) beating  Jacob Solly from Marist, 6-2, 4-6, 10-5, and sophomore Julien Philippe (Paris, France/Saint Honoré d’Eylau) scoring a 6-4, 6-3 win over Fordham's Pedar Gram in the quarterfinals.  

Seniors Ibrahim Shams (Cairo, Egypt/Manor House) (Flight A) and Mark Hemy (Suffolk, England/Ipswich School) (Flight G) as well as freshman Markus Sjoberg (Tyreso, Sweden/Varmdo Gymnasium) (Flight E) also added first-round singles wins before falling in their quarterfinal matches.

Gricheno and Skvarka teamed up for an 8-2 Flight C win over Mario Huljev and Marko Knezevic from Saint Peter's. The duo of Devaux-Lovell and Philippe was also victorious, 9-7, at Flight D over Matt Dean and Brian Powers of Sacred Heart.
