Baseball Heads to Stony Brook on Wednesday

Live Stats

The Fairleigh Dickinson baseball team will look to continue its recent success on Wednesday when they travel to Stony Brook, NY to take on the Seawolves of Stony Brook.  First-pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. at Joe Nathan Field.  The Knights and Seawolves played earlier in the season back on March 7 as SBU defeated FDU, 17-5, at the Naimoli Family Baseball Complex.

Last Time Out: FDU (11-12-1) is playing its best baseball in years and is coming off a NEC-series win over defending champion Sacred Heart as the Knights took three out of four (W 8-6, W 2-0, L 6-1, W 6-3).  FDU has now won eight of its last 11 games and put together its first five-game winning streak since the 2003 season.

Freshmen Pat McClure (Fayetteville, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius ) and Riley Moonan (Syracuse, N.Y./Cicero North) hit .375 (3-for-8) and .364 (4-for-11), respectively, in the SHU series.  Junior Kyle Weeks (Middle Island, N.Y./Longwood) hit .333 (5-for-15), while senior co-captain Ryan Kresky (Freehold, NJ/Freehold) hit .300 (3-for-10) with three runs scored, a home run, five walks and an on-base percentage of .563.

Junior Craig Warner (Coral Springs, Fla./Stoneman Douglas) pitched a quality start in the series opener but picked up a no-decision in his 6+ innings of work as he allowed only two earned runs on six hits, while walking three and striking out a career-best five.  Freshman Joe Borelli (Wallingford, Conn./Mark T. Sheehan ), who was recently named NEC Co-Rookie of the Week and NJCBA Rookie of the Week, was fantastic in his first career start on the bump.  In the second game of the series, the righty pitched a complete game, three-hit shutout, in FDU's 2-0 win.  Borelli walked two and struck out three in only 75 pitches.  Senior co-captain Mike Eliasen (Swedesboro, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) moved to 4-1 on the season after his second complete game of the year in the series-clinching victory on Sunday.  The righty allowed three earned runs on six hits, while walking four and striking out nine, one short of his career high.

Scouting Stony Brook: The Seawolves (16-8), who are picked to win the America East Conference, have gone 11-5 since their win over the Knights last month and have yet to lose at home (5-0).  SBU split its games with Kansas and Minnesota at the Dairy Queen Classic in Minneapolis, MN, defeated Iona at home, won three out of four in a home-and-home series with Yale, won at Fordham, won a doubleheader at Columbia, lost a doubleheader at Holy Cross and are coming of a pair of victories over NYIT this past weekend at home.

The Seawolves are led by junior infielder Max Tissenbaum and his .420 batting average (34-for-81), which includes eight doubles, three home runs, 14 RBIs and 17 runs scored.  Freshman outfielder Steven Goldstein is hitting .356 (16-for-45) with a home run and 11 RBIs, and junior outfielder Travis Jankowski is hitting .333 (30-for-90) with a team-best 24 runs scored, a team-high nine doubles, two triples, one home run and nine RBI's while stealing 16 bases in 20 attempts.  Junior infielder William Carmona is the SBU's top power threat as he leads the team with five home runs and 18 RBIs to go along with his .310 batting average (31-for-100) and 17 runs scored.

As a team, the Seawolves are hitting .295 (237-for-803) and have scored 138 runs (5.8 runs per game).  They have struck out 105 times, drawn 84 walks and have committed only 19 errors on defense.  Opponents are hitting only .216 (158-for-731) off SBU pitching and have scored 72 runs (3.0 runs per game), drawn 55 walks and struck out 138 times at the plate.

All-Time Series: The Seawolves have won all four games in the series dating back just three years ago.  Three out of the four contests have been played at the Naimoli Family Baseball Complex, and Wednesday's game will be the first one played on the campus of Stony Brook.

Next Up: The Knights will immediately turnaround and play a critical four-game NEC series at home against Wagner starting on Thursday, April 5.  Both teams are currently 7-5 in the conference and sit in a three-way tie for fourth place with Sacred Heart.  Game one of the series will begin at 3:00 p.m., Friday will feature a pair of seven-inning contests, while the series finale will take place at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday.
