Baseball Loses Late at Lafayette 7-6

Box Score

The Fairleigh Dickinson baseball team dropped its fourth-consecutive contest as they fall on the road Friday afternoon to Lafayette, 7-6, at Kamine Stadium in Easton, PA.  With the victory, the Leopards improve to 4-5 on the season, while the Knights fall to 1-5 overall.

Leading 5-4 heading into the bottom of the seventh inning, FDU saw the home team score three times to take a 7-5 lead and hold on for the victory.

Senior Ryan Kresky (Freehold, NJ/Freehold) had a big day at the plate for the Knights as he went 4-for-5 with his first home run of the season, two RBI's and a run scored.  Freshman Pat McClure (Fayetteville, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius ) went 3-for-5 with a double, a triple and three runs scored, while junior Kyle Weeks (Middle Island, N.Y./Longwood) added a run scored and two RBI's on his second home run of the season.  FDU racked up 12 hits on the afternoon.

Junior Eric Anderson (Allendale, N.J./Northern Highlands) started on the mound for the Knights and left with the lead after 6.0 innings of work.  The lefty allowed four runs, two earned, on five hits.  He walked two and struck out three.

Freshman Anthony Calise (Pearl River, N.Y./Pearl River) (0-1) was tagged with the loss as he came in to relieve Anderson to begin the seventh inning.  He pitched 0.2 innings and allowed three earned runs on three hits, walked three and struck out one.

The Leopards took a quick 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first on Bobby Fargnoli's two-out double off the left-center field fence.

Kresky tied the game at one in the third inning with his second single of the game to score freshman Jordan Ritz (Newport News, Va./Woodside) from second base.

Lafayette plated a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the third to retake the lead at 3-1 on Fragnoli's RBI single to center and a sacrifice fly to center by Brad Hopek.

In top of fourth, McClure led off the inning with a triple down the right-field line, and Weeks followed with a two-run homer to right-center field to tie the game at three.

After Anderson shutdown the Leopards in the bottom half of the fourth, Kresky gave FDU a 4-3 lead with a bomb over the right field fence.

Anderson once again did not allow a run to keep the momentum with the Knights heading into the top of the sixth.  With two outs, freshman Shane Siebler (Nazareth, Pa./Nazareth Area) knocked a two-out single through the left side to score McClure and extend FDU's lead to 5-3.

Lafayette cut the lead to 5-4 in the bottom of the sixth on a one-out RBI groundout back to Anderson, who made a diving stop to his right on the play before throwing to first.  Weeks then made a great snow cone catch running towards the right field line from his second base position to end the inning.

The Knights went down 1-2-3 in their half of the seventh inning.  Calise relieved Anderson to start the bottom of the frame and walked the lead-off batter on four pitches.  After the runner stole second, Brian Davila tied the game at five with an RBI single.

The Leopards took the lead for good on a two-out single by Hopek past a diving Weeks into right field to make the score 6-5.  The home team then added a big insurance run as Scott Kelleher followed with a bloop single, after Hopek stole second, to make it 7-5.

Junior Sean Yoshikawa (Fremont, CA/Irvington) hit a two-out double to left-center field to score McClure and cut the deficit to 7-6 but was stranded as the tying run.

Kresky led off the ninth with a single, but FDU could not muster anything after as Lafayette held on for the 7-6 win.

The Leopards, who had nine hits on the day, were led by Davila, Fargnoli and Kellecher as they each collected two hits.  Fargnoli and Hopek each collected a pair of RBI's, while Andrew Santomauro, Davila and Hopek each scored two runs.

John Gentile started on the hill for Lafayette and lasted 5.2 innings.  He allowed five earned runs on nine hits, while walking one and striking out three.  Chris Boyce, who relieved Gentile, picked up the win as he pitched 2.1 innings of relief, allowing one earned run on two hits, while walking none and striking out three.  Jeff Snell got the final out of the game to pick up the save.

The Knights and Leopards will return to action on Saturday in a doubleheader scheduled for Noon at the Naimoli Family Baseball Complex in Teaneck, NJ.  The first game will be a nine-inning contest with game two scheduled for seven innings.
