Baseball Splits First Doubleheader at Quinnipiac

Game One Box Score
Game Two Box Score

The Fairleigh Dickinson baseball team split its doubleheader Friday afternoon against Quinnipiac at the QU Baseball Field in Hamden, CT.  The Knights won game one, 8-4, before dropping the seven-inning second game, 11-4.  With the split, FDU is now 5-11-1 (2-4 NEC) on the season, while the Bobcats are 3-13 (2-4 NEC) overall.

The Knights took a 5-0 lead after the top of the sixth inning and never looked back in the opener.  Junior Craig Warner (Coral Springs, Fla./Stoneman Douglas) (1-1), who picked up the victory, pitched outstanding over the first six innings before running into some trouble in the seventh.  For the game, Warner pitched 6.1 innings, allowing four earned runs on nine hits, while walking one, striking out three and hitting a batter.  Freshman Eric Snyder (Slatington, Pa./Northern Lehigh) entered the game with one out in the ninth in a save situation and retired the final two batters for his third save of the season.

Freshman Riley Moonan (Syracuse, N.Y./Cicero North) led the FDU 13-hit attack by going 3-for-4 with a double, walk, a RBI and two runs scored.  Junior Eric Anderson (Allendale, N.J./Northern Highlands) went 2-for-4 with two doubles and a run scored, freshman Shane Siebler (Nazareth, Pa./Nazareth Area) also went 2-for-4, junior Kyle Weeks (Middle Island, N.Y./Longwood) collected two RBIs and freshman Pat McClure (Fayetteville, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius ) scored two runs, while picking up a RBI.

McClure gave the Knights an early 1-0 lead in the top of the second with a two-out single down the left-field line to score Moonan from second base.

Neither team scored over the next three innings, but FDU hung a crooked number on the scoreboard by scoring four times in the top of the sixth to take a 5-0 lead.  Anderson doubled to lead off the inning and took third on Weeks' productive ground out to second base.

Senior Matt Holsman (Coral Springs, FL/Stoneman Douglas) blooped a single down the right-field line to score Anderson, and Moonan roped a double to deep left-center field on a perfectly executed hit-and-run, scoring Holsman.  McClure grounded out to third but reached second base after the third baseman airmailed the throw, allowing Moonan to score.  Siebler singled home McClure with a base hit to left field and took second when the ball got past the left fielder.

Quinnipiac scored a single run in the bottom half of the sixth on Jesse Ullarich's RBI triple, cutting the Knights' lead to 5-1.
FDU answered with two more runs in the top of the seventh on Weeks' single through the left side, which scored Kresky and Eliasen, extending the Knights' lead to 7-1.

The Bobcats loaded the bases on consecutive singles to start the bottom of the seventh before Ritz made a diving catch in shallow left field for the first out.  After freshman Anthony Calise (Pearl River, N.Y./Pearl River) relieved Warner, Quinnipiac scored on a wild pitch.  With two outs, Vincent Guglietti singled home a pair of runs to make it a 7-4 Knights' lead.

Senior Mike Eliasen (Swedesboro, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) singled home McClure with a two-out single in the ninth, giving FDU an 8-4 lead, which would be the final score for game one.

The Bobcats pounded out 13 hits as well and were led by Zak Palmer's 4-for-4 performance.  Ullrich, Guglietti and Brian Ruditys each had two hits with Guglietti diving home two runs.

Quinnipiac ace Derek Lamacchia was tagged with the loss.  He allowed five runs, three earned, on nine hits in 6.0 innings.  He struck out five, did not walk anyone and hit a batter.

Game two was a much different story as the Bobcats scored four times on five hits in the bottom of the first to take a 4-0 lead.

Anderson led off the top of the second with his third double of the day and scored on a throwing error by the third baseman to cut the deficit to 4-1.

FDU then scored three times in the top of the third to tie the game at four.  Siebler and Ritz hit ringing singles to left field to start the inning.  After a Siebler was forced out at third on Eliasen's bunt back to the pitcher, senior Ryan Kresky (Freehold, NJ/Freehold) hit the first pitch he saw down the left field line, scoring Ritz and Eliasen.  Anderson then tied the game with a single up the middle to score Kresky.

However, Quinnipiac took the lead for good with a run in the bottom of the third.  A four-run fourth and a two-run sixth made the contest the final score 11-4.

Anderson (1-2) was charged with the loss on the mound.  In 3+ innings of work, he allowed five earned runs on six hits, while walking three, striking out two and hitting a batter.

Anderson and Siebler each had two hits to pace the Knights' eight-hit performance with Kresky driving home a pair of runs.

Spencer Kane went the distance for the Bobcats, allowing four runs, three earned, on eight hits, while walking one and striking out two.

Gabe Guerino went 3-for-3 with five RBI's and two runs scored.  His three-run homer in the bottom of the fourth put the game out of reach as it made the score 9-4.

Both teams will play another doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 1:00 p.m.  Game one will be a seven-inning contest with the second game slated for nine innings.
