BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Fairleigh Dickinson University men's basketball team fell to Lehigh University, 102-62, on Saturday, Dec. 1 at Stabler Arena. The Knights fall to 3-4 on the year as their three-game winning streak ends, while the Mountain Hawks improve to 6-2.
The Mountain Hawks dominated play from the opening tip and shot 63.3 percent from the floor to outscore the Knights. FDU turned the ball over 22 times and shot just 37.4 percent but saw double-digit scoring from three players.
Senior Lonnie Robinson (Deerfield Beach, Fla./Deerfield Beach) led the Knights with 21 points, while classmate Melquan Bolding (Mt. Vernon, N.Y./Bishop Stepinac) had 13 and freshman Sekou Harris (Plainfield, N.J./Plainfield High School) added 12.
Lehigh's CJ McCollum led all scorers with 23 points on the night. Stefan Cvrkalj added 20 for the Mountain Hawks.
A jump shot by Bolding started the game for FDU, but the Mountain Hawks wasted no time taking control of the game and went on a 21-0 run to pull ahead, 23-2, midway through the first half.
Bolding broke the streak with one made free throw but the Knights could not stop Lehigh's momentum.
The Mountain Hawks increased their lead to 33 points with five minutes to play in the half before the Knights were able to connect. Bolding, Harris and Robinson combined for 11 points in the final minutes of the half to bring the score to 46-17 at the break.
The Knights shot 25 percent from the floor in the first 20 minutes, while Lehigh made 61.5 percent of shots. FDU's 16 first-half turnovers enabled Lehigh to record 16 points off miscues.
Bolding and Mustafaa Jones (Philadelphia, Pa./Neumann-Goretti) hit three-point shots in the opening minutes of the second half to stop the Knights' scoring slump. Although the Knights doubled their scoring total from the first half midway through, the Mountain Hawks responded to each Knights' basket with points of their own.
The Mountain Hawks took their largest lead of the game, 78-33, with 8:30 left to play.
Robinson led the Knights' charge at the end of the game with 13 points in the final five minutes of play but could not cut the Lehigh advantage.
Overall, the Knights shot 37 percent from the field, while allowing Lehigh to connect on 63.3 percent of shots. FDU shot 42.1 percent from three-point range and 63.6 percent from the free-throw line. The Mountain Hawks shot 57.9 percent from a distance and connected at an 88.2 percent clip from the charity stripe.
Lehigh out-rebounded FDU, 37-24, and forced 22 turnovers. The Mountain Hawks also recorded 12 steals and four blocks.
The matchup with Lehigh concluded the Knights' road swing to begin the season. They will host Lafayette on Friday, Dec. 9 in their home opener at Stratis Arena. Tipoff is slated for 7 p.m.
