SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Fairleigh Dickinson women's basketball team dropped a 94-47 road decision to Syracuse at the Carrier Dome on Sunday evening. The Knights slip to 0-2 on the year as the Orange begins the 2012-13 season 1-0.
The Knights could not overcome 29 turnovers as the Orange took advantage with 39 points off turnovers. FDU continued to play well on the glass, with 17 offensive boards and 39 total, and was out-rebounded by just five as they fell to 0-3 all time against the Orange.
“We showed some nice progress today,” Head Coach
Peter Cinella said. “Syracuse is the No. 2 rebounding team in the country, and we only got out-rebounded by five. We showed some nice progress with our zone offense.”
Sophomore
Erika Livermore (Nazareth, Pa./Nazareth Area) recorded her second double-double in as many games with 10 points to go with a team-best 10 rebounds, while fellow sophomore
Stephanie Isaacs (Fair Haven, N.J./Rumson-Fair Haven) made three 3s and finished with a team-high 11 points. Point guard
Amanda Andrades (Virginia Beach, Va./Princess Anne) facilitated FDU's offensive efforts with five assists in 36 minutes of action.
Syracuse finished with five players in double figures, including center Kayla Alexander with a game-high 20 points. Alexander also led her team with 10 rebounds and eight blocks. The Orange, picked to finish seventh in the BIG EAST preseason coaches' poll, shot 50 percent from the field on 33-of-66 shooting. Rachel Coffey recorded nine assists off the bench, and Brittney Sykes and Shakeya Leary added 11 points apiece.
In the first half, the Knights trailed 4-3 before Syracuse broke the game open with a 20-0 run over a four-minute span for a 24-3 lead. During the first 20 minutes, the Knights and Orange were tied 12-12 on points in the paint and FDU outscored Syracuse, 6-3, on second-chance points.
Syracuse got its advantage by outscoring the Knights, 22-6, in first-half bench scoring and turned 18 first-half FDU turnovers into 26 points to take a 47-22 halftime lead. Isaacs paced FDU with eight first-half points, while Livermore had five of her 10 rebounds in the first 20 minutes.
Out of halftime, Livermore scored the first six points for FDU, but Syracuse's lead continued to grow as it pounded the ball down low. The Orange's Alexander shot 6-of-7 for 18 points and grabbed seven second-half rebounds.
The Knights improved their accuracy from distance in the second half with 4-of-7 shooting on 3s and finished the game with 20 points in the paint.
Next up for the Knights is their home debut against Army at Stratis Arena in Hackensack, N.J. on Thursday, Nov. 15, at 5 p.m.
