The Fairleigh Dickinson University women's soccer team (0-1-1) fell to the Hawks of Hartford, 2-0, on Friday, September 2 at University Stadium in Teaneck, NJ. The Knights take their first defeat of the season, while the Hawks improve to 2-0-1.
Hartford's attack began the game strong, posting three shots early in the first half. Sage DoVale (Lilburn, Ga./Collins Hill) minimized their scoring opportunities with four saves in the first half to keep the game even through the first 25 minutes.
With 20:22 remaining in the first half a foul was called against FDU in the penalty box. Hartford junior Amelia Pereira lined up for the penalty kick and put the Hawks ahead with a shot to the lower left corner of the net.
A hard shot from outside the penalty box challenged DoVale with nine minutes remaining in the half. Her save gave the Hawks a corner kick from the right side which reached Hawks' Caroline Dixon for a header just in front of the Knights' goal. Although Dixon's shot reached the back of the net, the goal was called off due to a Hartford foul.
After being out-shot, 14-3, in the first half, the Knights went into the break trailing 1-0.
FDU saw shots from newcomers, Lilja Gunnarsdottir (Kopavogur, Iceland/Menntaskolnn I Reykjavik) who had one and Kasey Schiavoni (West Chester, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) who tallied two, in the first five minutes of the second half but were unable to put the ball in the net.
After 79 minutes of tough play, Hartford drove the ball down the left side of the field and into the penalty box. Pereira crossed the ball to the right side where Caitlin Alves ripped a shot from 12 yards out to put the Hawks up 2-0.
Senior Lisa-Marie Curti (Richmond Hill, Ontario/St. Theresa of Lisieux) gave the Knights' their last attempt with a shot in the 81st minute. Curti collided with the Hartford goal keeper in an attempt to score off a corner kick.
DoVale took the loss in the Knight's second game of the season. She recorded six saves and allowed two goals.
The Knights travel to Binghamton, NY to take on the Bearcats on Sunday, September 4. Kickoff is slated for 1:00 pm.
