W. Volleyball Even at 1-1 After Day One of Beanpot Classic

Powered by double-doubles from junior Meaghan Wheeler (Chatsworth, CA/Chaminade College Prep), senior Sarah Willey (Abingdon, MD/Bel Air) and freshman Chelsea Braga (Long Beach, NY/Long Beach ), the Fairleigh Dickinson women's volleyball team earned a season-opening 3-1 win over the Holy Cross Crusaders Friday afternoon at the Beanpot Classic in Worcester, MA. 

The first game was tied 16 times before the Knights were able to pull off a 28-26 win. After dropping game two, 25-13, FDU responded with a 25-53 advantage in game three and a 25-21 match-clinching win in the fourth game.  

Wheeler recorded a match-high 16 kills and finished second on the team with 14 digs, while Willey dished out 21 of the Knights' 44 assists and had 14 digs of her own. Seeing her first action in the Burgundy and Blue, Braga contributed 12 kills and 11 digs for the Knights.

The Knights saved their most efficient offense for the fourth and final game when the team converted 13 kills with just six errors for an attack percentage of .179 to pick up the win. 

Senior middle blocker Sarah Berkland (Newton, MA/Newton North) led all players with four block solos and three block assists as FDU had nine total team blocks. 

Senior Kelsey Semler (Allentown, PA/Allentown Central Catholic) chipped in with a match-high 27 digs, and sophomore Taylor Roland-Buohl (Lancaster, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg)  led the Knights with 22 assists.  

In their second game of the day, the Knights fell at the hands of the Northeastern Huskies by a 3-0 final. 

The Huskies took game one by a score of 30-28 behind 17 team kills. The Knights were never able to recover as Northeastern followed up with 25-20 and 25-19 wins in the final two games. 

In total, the Huskies racked up 44 kills to the Knights' 31. 

Again Wheeler led the Knights with a match-high 18 of her team's 31 kills and also added four block assists. Willey set the table for the offense with 19 assists, while Semler recorded 10 digs. 

After the first day of action FDU has a 1-1 record on the season. The Knights will take the floor again tomorrow for the final game of the Beanpot Classic when they square off against Central Connecticut State in Boston, MA. The game is set to get underway at 10 a.m.
