The Fairleigh Dickinson women's soccer team won its second consecutive game Friday night as they defeated Robert Morris, 2-1, on a chilly evening at University Field in Teaneck in an NEC tilt. Junior Rashidah Sherman (Pelham Manor, NY/Pelham Memorial) (Pelham Manor, NY/Pelham Memorial) scored a pair of goals, one in each half, to lead the Knights to victory. With the victory, the Knights improve to 2-13-1 (2-5 NEC) on the season, while the Colonials fall to 5-9-2 (2-4-1 NEC) overall.
In the first half, the Knights offense put pressure on the Colonials from the opening kick-off as they dominated play on the visitors' side of the field. However, near the end of the 27th minute of play, the Colonials were awarded a free kick after a Knights' foul from just inside midfield. Robert Morris' Jessica Stubs took the kick and booted it into the goal box where the ball bounced to Jess Sharik on the left side, and she found the back of the net with a low kick on the bottom right side corner to put the Colonials up, 1-0.
Six minutes later, freshman Noelle Harner (Lewisberry, PA/Red Land) (Lewisberry, PA/Red Land) booted a ball from behind midfield and found Sherman on a breakaway. Sherman then beat the charging goalkeeper by lifting the ball over the keeper's head towards the net, resulting in a goal tying the game at one, which would be the score at the half. The goal was Sherman's second of the season, while the assist was Harner's second.
Over the first 45 minutes, the Knights outshot the Colonial, 10-5.
In the second half, the Knights continued to put pressure on the Colonials. In the 59th minute, Sherman intercepted a pass around midfield and broke loose from everyone and found herself all alone on a breakaway towards the goalkeeper. She then beat the keeper to the right to give the Knights a 2-1 lead. It was her third goal of the season.
During the last two minutes of play, Robert Morris put tremendous pressure on the Knights in front of the goal. Junior Julie Woolridge (St. John's, Newfoundland/Bishops College) (St. John's, Newfoundland/Bishops College) saved the game for the Knights as she made a save with her body in front of the net. The Knights were able to clear the ball and hang on for the 2-1 victory.
The Knights recorded a season-high in shots as they outshot the Colonials, 17-14.
Junior Stephanie Tanzi (Smithtown, NY/Smithtown West) (Smithtown, NY/Smithtown West) picked up the victory in net for the Knights as she recorded three saves. Jessica Olin recorded eight saves for the Colonials.
The Knights return to action on Sunday, October 24, as they will play their final home game of the 2010 season. Senior day festivities will take place before the game at University Field, with kick-off scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
