UTSA Hands Men's Basketball 75-61 Loss on Tuesday

The University of Texas- San Antonio (4-0) handed the Fairleigh Dickinson University men's basketball team (1-4) a 75-61 loss on Tuesday evening in competition at the O'Reilly Auto Parts CBE Classic, hosted by Eastern Kentucky in Richmond, KY.

Sean Baptiste (North Brunswick, NJ/St. Josephs of Metuchen) led the Knights with 18 points, while Kamil Svrdlik (Prerov, Czech Republic/Gymnazium Zlin) had 10 points and six rebounds.  Alvin Mofunanya (Englewood, NJ/Dwight Morrow) recorded his third-straight game in double-digits with 10 points, adding six rebounds and two blocks.

The Knights took an early lead as Terence Grier (Cranford, NJ/St. Thomas More Prep) started the game with an old-fashioned three-point play. In the fast-paced start to the first half, there were 15 lead changes over the first 20 minutes. The Knights pulled ahead on a fade away from Mofunanya, 13-12, who registered block on the other end. Mike Scott (Philadelphia, PA/Texas Christian)'s runner in the lane gave FDU a 25-21 lead.

Baptiste put in two from the line to give FDU the 27-23 edge with just over six minutes remaining in the first half.

The Roadrunners tied up the game, 27-27, and surged ahead as part of it an 11-0 run that closed out the half to take a 34-27 lead into the break.

Baptiste led Fairleigh Dickinson with eight points in the first half. The two teams were evenly matched on the boards, 16-16.

The Roadrunners came out of the break quickly, connecting on back-to-back baskets in the first minute to take a 38-27 lead, but the Knights put in back-to-back buckets of their own.

A layup by Omar Johnson, who finished the game with 13 points, gave UTSA a 42-31 advantage, but Baptiste and Svrdlik netted back-to-back baskets to cut the game to 42-37 with 15 minutes on the clock.

Scott sank two from the line after a technical foul on the UTSA bench and Baptiste followed, sinking a pair of free throws. Scott pulled down a rebound and fed it and Baptiste sank a pull-up jumper to cut the Roadrunners' lead to two, 45-43, with 12 minutes left to play.

Morris Smith IV had eight of Texas-San Antonio's next 10 points to spark a 23-5 run over the next eight minutes, giving the Roadrunners a 70-50 lead with 3:37 remaining. The Knights suffered a nine-minute stretch with no field goals, but connected on seven shots from the line. Louis Larizza (Port Chester, NY/Port Chester) recorded the final seven points of the game to make the final 75-61.

FDU's bench out-scored UTSA, 17-9. The Knights were almost even with the Roadrunners in points off turnovers (7-9) and points in the paint (12-14), but were edged in second-chance points (3-10).

Smith IV finished with 14 points, leading five Roadrunners' in double-digits. Terry Fields, Devin Gibson and Melvin Johnson III each had 12 points.

FDU was out-rebounded, 37-32. The Knights shot 19-for-32 from the free throw line, despite 10-for-10 from Baptiste. UTSA connected on 17-of-18 from the charity stripe.

FDU shot 42 percent from the floor, to Texas-San Antonio's 44 percent.

"We have held every team we've played so far under their scoring average and that is a tribute to the maximum effort from the team," said Head Coach Greg Vetrone. "We are strong on transition on the attack. We just have to keep working on executing our offense and on our free throws and we'll be fine."

The Knights wrap up competition in the O'Reilly Auto Parts CBE Classic on Wednesday with an 8:00 p.m. game versus UC-Irvine in McBrayer Arena.
