Late Goal Thwarts Women?s Soccer?s Upset Bid

The Fairleigh Dickinson University women's soccer team was edged, 1-0, Friday, Sept. 12 by the University of Nevada ? Las Vegas. In the opening contest of the Nike Invitational in Albuquerque, NM, a goal in the 80th minute shifted the Rebels to 5-1-1 on the season.

On a neutral field, UNLV sophomore forward Ashleigh Shoughro won a 50-50 ball in the 80th minute and produced the unassisted game-winner.

“We had a tremendous effort today with unfortunate results,” Head Coach Renee Montana said.  “We made adjustments very well this game and we look forward to coming out on Sunday against another formidable opponent in the University of New Mexico.”

Knights' (3-3) junior goalkeeper Megan MacKellar (/Brookwood) registered six saves in the loss.  Junior counterpart Alicia Lugo also stopped six shots, en route to the shutout.

“Megan stepped up with a great game in goal,” Montana continued, “She set the tone.  Emotionally, we really wanted to this game for [junior midfielder] Katie Hilder (Caringbah, Sydney, Australia/Woolooware), who was not able to travel.”

FDU junior midfielder Lora Lehr (Rosemere, Quebec/Villa Maria) paced the squad with five shots.

Fairleigh Dickinson faces the host UNM Lobos at 3:00 p.m. (5:00 p.m. EST), Sunday, Sept. 14.
