Midfielder Julie Woolridge (St. John's, Newfoundland/Bishops College)'s scoring strike ? the first of her collegiate career ? in the 36th minute propelled the Fairleigh Dickinson University women's soccer team to a victorious Northeast Conference debut over Mount St. Mary's University, Friday, Oct. 3 in Emmitsburg, MD.
The freshman beat the goalkeeper to the right side, as the Knights (4-6 overall, 1-0 NEC) registered their second road victory of the year, following the afternoon's 1-0 margin. Classmate Rashidah Sherman (Pelham Manor, NY/Pelham Memorial), a forward, increased her season point total to 11, collecting her first-ever assist by virtue of the game-winner.
“Everyone stepped up today,” Head Coach Renee Montana said. “We executed a well-played, hard-fought game and were able to come out with a big win. I'm proud of the way we stayed focused on the task at hand and put together a solid 90 minutes.”
Senior goalkeeper Rachel Derrico (/Canon McMillan) made two saves to earn her second shutout. Meanwhile, FDU out-shot their home-standing foe, 18-7. The Mountaineers slipped to 1-10 overall and 0-1 in league play.
Fairleigh Dickinson heads to intrastate rival Monmouth University ? the defending NEC champs ? at noon, Sunday, Oct. 5.
