TEANECK, NJ -
Senior Marguerite Ferrell (Rahway, NJ) celebrated senior day with a game-winner to lead the Fairleigh Dickinson University women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory against visiting Mount St. Mary's on Sunday afternoon. The Knights improve to 8-7-1 overall with a 4-2-1 league record, while the Mountaineers fell to 4-9-3 overall with a 0-5-2 mark in conference play.
After the Knights fired six shots in the first seven minutes of the game, senior Kristen Habenicht (New Hyde Park, NY) started the play that opened scoring when she sent the ball down the left side to junior Christine McCartney (Ottawa, Ontario), who passed it along to Ferrell.
Ferrell dribbled around the goalkeeper and launched the ball into the bottom left side of an open net to give the Knights the 1-0 advantage.
The Knights out-shot the Mountaineers, 27-2 and held a 6-2 edge in corner kicks. Sophomore Anna Lebo (Walkersville, MD) made 10 saves between the posts for the Mount, while junior Kyla Clark (Ottawa, Ontario) made one save in goal for the Knights.
"We didn't play as well as we could have, but we still got the job done to get a necessary win," said Head Coach Peter Gaglioti. "It shows obviously that we're capable of getting a result even if we weren't playing as sharp. We did a solid job defensively by not really giving Mount any clear scoring chances and we created several dangerous opportunities."
The Knights are back in action at Long Island on Friday, Oct. 28 at 5:00 p.m.
