SEEKONK, MASS. – The Knights finished as runners-up this weekend at the Ryan T. Lee Memorial Intercollegiate, hosted by Brown University at Ledgemont Country Club in Seekonk, Massachusetts. They finished in second place with a total of -1 for the three rounds, finishing just one shot behind Bryant and one shot ahead of fellow NEC member LIU.
After opening the tournament at even par, the Knights slipped to +3 in the second round before responding with a -4 final round, including a late charge for the overall title in the closing holes, to finish at -1.
Consistency across the starting 5 was the key to the Knights' success this week, with four players all finishing at +2 and tied 13
th for the tournament individually.
Nutthachai Khamkhokgruad wasted no time in his first collegiate start. 4 birdies in a row early on saw him flying high. He finished at -3, 68, making his maiden round in Burgundy and Blue also his first under-par score for FDU.
This fast start was matched by senior William McKernan, although in a very different manner. A solid start was derailed by a triple bogey on his 8
th hole, but this didn't seem to faze the Englishman. A five-under 31 on his back nine featuring 5 birdies and 4 pars saw him also end the day on -3.
While Khamkhokgruad and McKernan led the Knights to start, it was Piccoli and Singh who led their late charge up the leaderboard. Piccoli showed real character to bounce back with rounds of -2 and -3 after a poor opening round. His final round was highlighted by an eagle-birdie finish. Singh got better after each 18, eventually closing in -3 for his last 6 holes to secure 2
nd place for the Knights.
