TEANECK, N.J. - FDU Baseball (29-15-1, 22-5 NEC) used an offensive outburst combined with a great performance on the mound from
Cooper Montelbano and
Mason Hebert to beat the CCSU Blue Devils (14-23, 11-16 NEC) on Sunday to complete the series sweep, the first time the Knights have swept CCSU in the program's history.
The Knights opened the scoring in the third inning, as the nation's sacrifice fly leader picked up another SAC fly, as
Garryn Plummer plated
Johnathan Gomez to open the scoring for FDU. The Knights got their fourth zero in a row to start the game from
Cooper Montelbano, and then added three more in the bottom of the fourth.
The rally started with
Jeremy Cheeseman's 12th home run of the season. FDU manufactured two more runs in the fourth, as
Johnathan Gomez hit a sacrifice fly that scored
Jeremy Delamota, and the Knights executed another first and third play, where FDU traded an out for a run. FDU led the Blue Devils 4-0 after the first four innings.Â
CCSU finally broke the Montelbano shutout, as the Blue Devils scratched across a run on a sacrifice fly, but Montelbano would get through the remainder of the inning, exiting the game with a final line of 5.0 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 2 SO, 2 BB, earning his first win of the season.Â
FDU picked up the run that Montelbano gave up, by getting the run back in the fifth inning, as the Knights converted on a Blue Devil error to score a run, taking a 5-1 advantage into the sixth.Â
The Knights broke the game open in the seventh inning, as FDU got a pair of two run singles from
Travis Stroh and
Luke Russo, while also getting a RBI double from
Johnathan Gomez, and all of a sudden, a three run lead ballooned to eight, and the Knights got a shut down effort from
Mason Hebert who only gave up one run in his four innings of relief, getting the Knights across the finish line, only using two pitchers in each game of the series.Â
FDU's win on Sunday afternoon marked the 29th of the season, and the 22nd in NEC play. Another week of baseball has gone by where the Knights have held onto their first place advantage, as with six games left in the NEC calendar, the Knights are 1 win or Le Moyne loss away from clinching a spot in the 2026 NEC Baseball Tournament.Â
Â
FDU will play in their final midweek game of the season, as the Knights will head to West Long Branch to take on the Monmouth Hawks. First pitch from MU Baseball Field is set for 3 p.m.Â
