HACKENSACK, N.J.- The FDU Knights (13-10, 7-3 NEC) fell to the UMES Hawks (14-10, 5-5 NEC) 3-1 in an NEC Men's Volleyball match. Prior to the contest, the Knights honored their six seniors at senior day:
Dylan McFadden,
Diego Diaz,
Naveen Fernando,
Panagiotis Kourmouzos,
Baboloki Silwane, and
Jamal Ellis. Following the loss, the Knights still remain in a highly contested race for one of the top four spots in the NEC Tournament.
FDU jumped out to a 5-2 lead to begin the inaugural set.
Laydon Biro accounted for four of the first five points with three kills and a service ace. The Hawks opened up the contest with seven of the next eight points to jump in front, 9-6.
Despite kills from
Rayjan Suarez Palacios and
Jamal Ellis, the Knights remained just behind the hawks through the remainder of the set. UMES utilized a three point burst and a set ending string of three points to take the first set 25-19.
The Knights began the second set engaged in a close contest. Three kills from Ellis helped the Knights step in front with a 5-3 advantage. The teams battled into a 7-7 tie, before UMES extended their lead to 11-8. The Knights battled back, with Panagiotis Kormouzos landing a kill and a block, and Ellis dealing consecutive kills to cap off a four-point-run. FDU led 13-11.
Both teams continued to stay within one point of each other down the stretch. Facing match point,
Dylan McFadden tied the contest at 24-24.
Vinil Shah dealt two kills to keep the score tied at 27-27. Ellis landed a kill before a UMES attack error ended the set in favor of the Knights, 29-27.
Kormouzos and Suarez Palacios made key plays early for FDU, with the pair of middle blockers combining for FDU's first three kills, leading to an early 4-4 tie. The visiting Hawks landed five of the next six points to pull in front, 9-5. The Knights closed the gap to a 9-8 deficit, before
Dylan McFadden dealt two kills to push the Knights in front 11-10.
With the score tied at 14 each way, Shah landed three unanswered kills to give the Knights a 17-14 advantage. The advantage soon evaporated as a result of a six-point0run by the visitors. The Knights trailed 23-19 before closing the set 25-20.
Trailing 4-2, Suarez Palacios dealt a kill, while Ellis contributed back-to-back aces to narrowly lead 5-4. The teams scores point-for-point, before UMES closed the gap at 11-11.
The teams continued to score back-and-forth. With any scoring runs by one team matched by the other. Playing into extra points, the teams were tied 26-26. FDU scored first, leading 27-26, before UMES ended the match with three straight points. The final score of the fourth set was 29-27 in favor of the visitors.
The Knights close out their season at Saint Francis next weekend. The first matchup is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. on April 17.
