TEANECK, N.J. - FDU Baseball (7-7, 4-1 NEC) used another game of heavy offense to take care of the Coppin State Eagles (2-12, 2-3 NEC) on Saturday afternoon at Naimoli Family Baseball Complex.
Saturday marked the fourth contest in a row that the Knights notched 14 or more runs, a stretch that started on Tuesday, where the Knights have now scored 68 runs in the calendar week through just four ballgames, outscoring opponents 68-37 in this week of baseball so far.
This ballgame was once again started with the Eagles jumping out front, taking a 4-0 lead, scoring a couple of runs on RBI singles, and also scoring on a pair of FDU errors that made the score 4-0 heading into the bottom of the fourth inning.
FDU would cut the Coppin State lead in half in the fourth, first with
Jimmy Mantuano scoring on a Coppin State throwing error, then
Jeremy Delamota came around to score on a throwing error as well, which cut the Coppin State lead to just two. After a Coppin State run in the fifth, the Knights responded in a big way in the bottom half of the fifth, which was started by
Hunter Ray's third homer of the season, as he took the Coppin State pitcher deep to center field on the first pitch of the inning.
Jimmy Mantuano then singled home
Garryn Plummer, and then
Nick Quagliato plated
Diego Urreta which tied the game at five through the end of five innings. The sixth inning was another big inning for the Knights as the frame started with
Travis Stroh's first homer of the season, which was of the two run variety, that gave FDU their first lead of the game at 7-5. Then
Diego Urreta plated
Johnathan Gomez by way of an sacrifice fly.
Hunter Ray then came around to score off a Coppin State error which made it a three run ballgame in favor of the Knights. FDU would extend their lead even further after
Jeremy Delamota's first homer of the season to make the game 11-5 FDU.
The Knights would put the finishing touches on the mercy rule victory in the seventh inning, first with a Gomez RBI single that scored
Caleb Walker, followed by a Urreta fielder's choice that scored Stroh, and
Tyler Worth put the game out of reach with a 2 run double that scored both Urreta and Gomez to win the game by way of a 15-5 mercy rule in the seventh inning.
FDU will meet Coppin State in the final game of a three game set at Naimoli Family Baseball Complex on Sunday. First pitch is set for 12 p.m. with FDU's starter set to be freshman right hander
