FDU Grabs 10 Medals at NEC Indoor Championships

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. - FDU Track and Field wrapped up the last day of competition at the NEC Indoor Track and Field Championships at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex in Staten Island.

The FDU Men's squad took home fourth place overall, grabbing 84 total points, and finishing just outside the top three, ending up just eight points shy of third place. The Knights on the Men's side were led by sophomore Ethan Ruffin, who on Sunday afternoon broke the NEC Indoor Track and Field High Jump record, as Ruffin soared over the 2.15 meter bar to win the first gold medal for FDU at this year's championships.

Junior Xavier Hayletts was another Knight that claimed a gold medal, as the fastest man in the NEC ran a time of 6.87 seconds to take home first place. Fellow sprinter Tele Abe took home two medals on Monday afternoon for FDU, as Abe took 3rd in both the 200 meter dash as well as the 60 meter hurdles.

Chase Lopez smashed his new personal best time in the Men's Mile, and came fractions of a second away from taking home gold, but the sophomore distance runner crossed the finish line in second, with a mile time of 4:09.61. Joshua Gresham also took home a medal for the Knights, as he took the bronze in the Men's 400 meter dash with a time of 49.02 seconds.

Darien Cade was the last Knight on the Men's team to medal, as his throw of 15.87 meters brought home third place in the Men's Shot Put event.

The FDU women's team was once again led by junior multi Tata Coulibaly, who took home first place in the Women's Weight Throw with a distance of 17.04 meters, while also taking fourth in the Women's Shot put the day before. Her performance in those two events was enough for her to be recognized as the NEC Most Valuable Field Athlete at the 2026 event.

Graduate thrower Laila Davis in the last indoor meet of her career finished the Women's Weight Throw event in second place after throwing a mark of 16.54 meters. Nya Blades was the last Knight on the Women's team to medal, as she took second in the 60 meter hurdles with a time of 8.74 seconds.

This concludes the NEC Indoor Season for the FDU Track and Field Team, and now the Knights will shift their focus to the outdoor season, with their schedule yet to be announced.
