Knights and Lakers Tie After Mercyhurst Scores Goal With One Second Left

Box Score TEANECK, N.J. — FDU (7-2-3, 1-0-2) played Mercyhurst (3-3-6, 0-1-3) to a 1-1 tie Thursday at Macron Stadium after a Laker goal with one second left on the clock. The Knights were outshot 11-4, including 10-2 in the second half, but allowed only two shots on goal.

The Knights were the first to the scoreboard Thursday afternoon as Jeremie Pelade buried his sixth of the season when he scored off a free kick, getting beautiful assists from Thomas Giraudo and Genti Dauti for a 1-0 lead in the 11th minute of the match.

Mercyhurst earned a corner shortly after the goal, and the match moved through a physical stretch with four fouls and a Krystian Nitek yellow card all in four minutes, while the score stayed 1-0.
FDU got their second shot of the half as Pelade had his shot saved at 28:44, but that would be all they could muster, in turn also shutting down Mercyhurst, as the Knights took a 1-0 lead into halftime.

The second half saw a bunch of back and forth physical play, most notably with the Knights losing one of their best defenders Julian Ramirez, as he was sent off with a red card in the 63rd minute of the match. This match marked the second in a row where the Knights had a top defender sent off by way of a red card.

As for offense, no team created a real scoring chance until about five minutes left in the match when Mercyhurst rang a shot off the post. The ball was quickly cleared by the Knights, eliminating the rebound chance, as the clock continued to tick down.

Mercyhurst was awarded a corner kick with the clock ticking down under 10 seconds, as the Lakers executed a beautiful crossing play with Joe Chinchilla being on the receiving end to tap the ball home past Matheus Franca, tieing the match with one second remaining.

The game ended just one second following the post goal scoring kick-off, ending the match in a 1-1 tie. With the draw, the Knights move to 7-2-3 overall, and 1-0-2 in NEC play. Mercyhurst is now 3-3-6 overall and 0-1-3 in conference play.
