BROOKVILLE, N.Y. - FDU Men's Soccer (8-3-3, 2-1-2 NEC) was upended Thursday afternoon by the LIU Sharks (4-7, 4-1 NEC) on Thursday afternoon at LIU Soccer Park.
The Knights and Sharks started this contest like most of their get togethers in the past, trading opportunities with physical play for both teams in both phases of the match. The Sharks were credited with more shots in the first 45 minutes, but veteran Knights goalkeeper
Matheus Franca was up to the task. The senior made four saves in the first half to hold LIU scoreless. FDU could not turn in any quality chances, and the two teams would head into halftime with the game tied at 0.
LIU opened the scoring in the 52nd minute with Tal Levy's seventh goal of the campaign. The goal would go without an assist, and once the Sharks broke the dam, they never looked back.
After staving off a handful of FDU opportunities, the Sharks scored once again, as the took advantage of a FDU back line that was pinching in their offensive half, and the Knights quickly had it turn against them, and all of a sudden Levy found himself one on one with Franca, where he put it past the Knights keeper for his second goal of the match, extending the LIU lead to a pair of goals.
The Knights were never able to recover from the two devastating blows that ended up in the back of their net, and the Sharks were able to tack on one more goal for good measure, as LIU cruised to the finish line, topping FDU by a final count of 3-0.
FDU will take the rest of this week off, and play a week from Thursday's loss, when the Knights welcome in Central Connecticut, the team that stands at the top of the table in the NEC. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. and the game will be streamed on NEC Front Row, live from Macron Stadium in Teaneck.
