Dylan McFadden leads the FDU Knights (8-7, 1-1) to their first conference win on Saturday at the Bogota Savings Bank Center against the LIU Sharks (13-5, 1-1), 3-2.
Set 1:
The Sharks started the first set off strong taking a 6-0 lead. FDU fought hard in the middle of the set to tie and take the lead twice. Although the Knights kept it exciting, LIU pulled through, winning 25-21.
Set 2:
FDU battled through the second set holding a consistent lead up until the final points of the game. LIU's 15 kills and .944 reception percentage helped them take a late lead. After a long and competitive set, LIU was able to wear the Knights down and win, 25-22.
Set 3:
The Knights showed up strong in the third set, unwilling to go out in three. Two game changing highlights for FDU this set were their sideout percentage at 72% and perfect reception percentage. However, LIU did not make it easy for them, nearly clawing their way back multiple times. FDU secured their win this set at the net, logging 20 kills, 8 of which can be attributed to McFadden. This exciting set ended with FDU taking their first win, 25-22
Set 4:
FDU came into the fourth set with the same determination as the last and earned a confident second win this game. McFadden led the attack again with 5 kills and the Knights defense followed suit capping LIU's hitting percentage at .051. Their energy and grit on and off the court ultimately won this set for them, 25-21.
Set 5:
The fifth set was emotional on both sides of the court with 1 yellow card (FDU) and 1 red card (LIU) being handed out. FDU continued to play well, earning a sideout percentage 76% and continuing their perfect reception percentage. The Knights ended the game winning the fifth set, 20-18.
This long and exciting match had many highlights for FDU on both offense and defense. On the attack McFadden finished the game with 23 kills and a .333 hitting percentage.
Grady Hoffman led the Knights in digs, tallying 16, and the team earned 12 blocks, 5 of which can be credited to
Naveen Fernando.
