WAPPINGERS FALLS, N.Y. – The FDU Knights (2-19, 2-4 NEC) were on the verge of victory in their midweek matchup against Marist (7-11, 4-2 MAAC) before a late-inning rally by the Red Foxes resulted in a heartbreaking 4-3 walk-off loss on Wednesday afternoon.
The Knights struck first in the top of the third inning when Travis Stroh raced home on a wild pitch, giving FDU an early 1-0 lead. They extended their advantage in the fifth when Johnathan Gomez lifted a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring the first run of the inning, followed by a hard-hit ball off the bat of Diego Urreta that brought another run across, pushing the lead to 3-0.
FDU's pitching staff kept Marist off the scoreboard through six strong innings, but the Red Foxes finally broke through in the seventh with a sacrifice fly, trimming the deficit to 3-1.
The Knights maintained their two-run cushion entering the bottom of the ninth, but Marist staged a dramatic comeback. A double to left field plated a run, and an FDU defensive miscue allowed the Red Foxes to tie the game at 3-3. With momentum fully on their side, Marist sealed the victory with a walk-off single to right field, handing FDU another tough 4-3 defeat.
