BROOKLYN, N.Y. — FDU women's volleyball (16-10, 10-3) faced off Friday night against the LIU Sharks (15-8, 12-1), falling just short in a five-set match (15-25, 26-24, 26-28, 25-21, 15-8).
It was an all out battle between the Sharks and Knights, but the power of Kylie Nott, MacKenzy Ruggiero, and Vittoria Bertoli were not enough to outlast LIU.
Set 1:
LIU jumped to an early lead. The Knights crawled back, coming within two. The Sharks got on a hot streak and the Knights were unable to get their offensive rhythm going. LIU closed out set one 25-14.
Set 2:
The Knights responded after dropping set one, forcing LIU to call timeout early, 10-5. However, the Sharks slowly chipped away and three late attack errors by FDU allowed LIU back in the match. Vittoria Bertoli would seal the set with a monster block, 26-24.
Set 3:
A back-and-forth battle, the Knights defense ramped up to garner a lead. A service run by LIU would overtake the lead late, but FDU responded with big time plays to have set point. The Sharks did not back down, pushing the Knights to overtime and taking the set 28-26.
Set 4:
FDU immediately put the pressure on the Sharks, becoming a well-oiled machine and opening a lead. However, LIU rallied behind the service line to close in on FDU's lead. The Knights rallied behind the arm of Kylie Nott, forcing a fifth set, 25-21.
Set 4:
The Sharks came out with some heat, jumping to an early lead 8-1. FDU could not find their footing. LIU finished the match, 15-8.
