TEANECK, N.J. – FDU men's soccer (7-3-3, 3-0-1) drew a Sunday afternoon match with LIU (4-2-6, 1-1-2) by a score of 1-1.
The Knights jumped out in front to kick things off. In the 38th minute, Alex Ferenac sent a wonderful cross into the box. Arnau Rabassa Guillamon positioned himself at the right post, where he directed a beautiful header past LIU goalkeeper Andrew Marotta.
The goal is Rabassa Guillamon's third on the season. His goal also gives him eight points on the season, which is tied with his FDU teammate Eric Dlabal for the fourth-most in the NEC.
"The first half was good," said head coach Jaymee Highcock. "We controlled the game, played the game in their half, and we did good."
As the second half rolled around, and clouds rolled over University Stadium, the intensity in Teaneck picked up. The two rival programs played a physical and chippy second half. Three yellow cards were issued to both programs across the final thirty minutes of action.
Despite the physicality, LIU was able to scrape a goal across to level the match. In the 62nd minute, Niklas Thanhofer was able to score off of an LIU corner kick. One of the aforementioned yellow cards was issued to Marotta in the ensuing celebration of Thanhofer's goal.
The two teams continued to battle across the remainder of regulation, but neither squad was able to find the equalizer. Jaime Barbero had the best chance for a game-winner of any player in the 87th minute. Barbero sent a header towards the crossbar, where Marotta made an excellent save to deflect the ball up in the air and keep the match tied.
The Knights remain undefeated in NEC play with the draw, and rank second in the conference table at 3-0-1.
FDU will be back in action on Sunday, October 19. The Knights will travel to face Stonehill in North Easton, Mass. at 1 p.m. Coverage will be available on NEC Front Row.
