STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – The Knights cliched their spot in the NEC Championship with a 9-5 win over Wagner on Saturday afternoon. FDU finishes the season winning 10 of their last 11 on their way to an 18-14 record in the NEC.
Brian Sanders remained hot at the top of the lineup. The Knights' new leadoff hitter drove in five runs and produced four hits, including his tenth home run of the year. As a team, FDU exploded for 16 hits.
After surrendering game's first two runs in the bottom of the second,
Zac Capps settled in. The right hander went six innings, scattered nine hits and allowed four earned runs. The NEC leader in strikeouts punched out seven Wagner hitters in this outing.
It did not take long for the FDU offense to answer Wagner's early 2-0 lead. In the top of the third
Jeremy Cheeseman roped a two-RBI double that knotted the game. He was brought in thanks to a single from
Hunter D'Amato. Just like that FDU had taken a 3-2 lead. This lead was added onto with a solo shot from Sanders in the fourth.
In the sixth inning the Knights blew it open.
Joan Sosa drove in a run to kick things off. Then, Sanders and Cheeseman continued their impressive days with a pair of RBI singles that extended the FDU lead to 8-2.
Vladimir Ceverino took things over on the mound in the seventh. He delivered three scoreless innings of two hit baseball and struck out six hitters in the process. He put the Seahawks down 1-2-3 in the ninth to seal his sixth save of the year.
TJ Werner,
Nate Dudeck, and D'Amato all had multi-hit days in the win as well.
