Capps Shuts Down Coppin State to Secure the Sweep

TEANECK, N.J. – The FDU Knights (22-27, 16-13) closed their three-game series against Coppin State (12-29, 11-18) with an 8-0 shutout victory over the Bald Eagles.

Graduate student, Zac Capps started the day on the mound for FDU where he completed seven successful innings of work. Capps struck out 14 batters on the day to match his career-high that he set earlier this season at LIU. The right-hander allowed three hits and only issued one walk in his time of work on the mound in today's combined shutout.

The first two innings were quiet offensively until Hunter D'Amato poked a single to second base that scored the first run of the game in the third innings.

Joan Sosa made some noise for the Knights in the fourth inning when he blasted a ball over the left field wall to give FDU a 2-0 lead. This marked Sosa's second homerun of the season.

The Knights plated three runs in the fifth inning thanks to contact from D'Amato, Justin Sierra and Nick Quagliato. With a single off the bat of D'Amato that scored Brian Sanders, the Knights found their first run of the inning. Sierra followed it up with a single of his own that brought D'Amato in to score. Two batters later, Quagliato rifled a hard single into left field that scored Sierra to extend FDU's lead to 5-0.

Jeremy Cheeseman continued his dominance at the plate in the seventh inning with a two-run blast over the center field wall to bring the Knights lead up to 7-0.

FDU found their final run of the day that resulted off a Quagliato double to right field.

The Knights closed out the game with an 8-0 shutout victory over Coppin State.

We saw Jake Simon make a relief appearance pitching the final two innings to secure the combined shutout win. Simon struck out two batters in his time on the mound.

The Knights managed to pick up 14 hits and two walks in today's game. Five Knights picked up a multi-hit game with Brian Sanders and Nick Quagliato leading the charge with three hits with each. D'Amato, Sierra and Sosa all recorded two hits apiece.Cheeseman and TJ Werner tacked on one hit each as well.
