BROOKVILLE, N.Y. - The FDU Knights (13-20, 9-8) closed out their three-game series against the LIU Sharks (15-16, 13-5) with a 5-3 loss.
Graduate student
Zac Capps got the nod today pitching through seven full innings and striking out 14 batters he faced. Capps only allowed one earned run and eight hits and only issued one walk on the contest. This marks a career-high in strikeouts for the Norfolk, Virginia native.
The Knights got on the board first in the top of the first inning scoring one run that resulted off a lead off triple from
Luke Russo who was driven in by contact off the bat of
Jeremy Cheeseman to take a 1-0 lead in the first.
Scoring was kept silent on both sides until the Sharks saw an opportunity to score one in the bottom of the fifth.
FDU didn't find an answer until the top of the seventh.
Nick Quagliato landed on the base path with a single to right field. With two outs,
Brian Sanders launched a ball over the left field wall to score Quagliato and give the Knights a 3-1 lead.
Going into the bottom of the ninth, FDU still held a 3-1 lead. With two singles and a walk sandwiched in there to load the bases with two outs for the Sharks, Jake Mastillo hit a walk-off grandslam to end the game and issue a 5-3 loss to FDU.
We saw
Ian Barrett make a relief appearance pitching the final 1.2 inning. He faced ten batters, striking out four of them, but gave up the walk-off grandslam in the loss.
The Knights managed to pick up 11 hits and two walks in today's game.
Hunter D'Amato,
Justin Sierra,
Joan Sosa and Quagliato picked up multi-hit games with two hits each. Russo, Sanders and
Joey DiMotta all recorded one hit each.
