Box Score EASTON, Mass. – FDU women's soccer picked up three important points on Thursday night with a 2-0 win at Stonehill. The win propels the Knights ahead of the Skyhawks in the league table and improves their NEC record to 5-1-1. Stonehill saw their four-match winning streak snapped with the loss.
While the offensive production was certainly there, the FDU defense completely stifled a Stonehill team that came into tonight tied for the league lead in goals scored. The Knights held the Skyhawks to just four shots.
Laura Martinez got the Knights going in the 21' with a long-range strike that found the back of the net. Martinez, who now has two goals on the year, took a pass from
Leighann Kafel and buried a shot from well outside the box. Kafel was credited with her first assist of the season.
In the 34', FDU earned their second corner of the night. On their first attempt, FDU nearly cashed in off a dangerous service from
Ana Salas. On this attempt, Salas' cross found the head of
Andrea Ougaard, who knocked it down and with pace to beat the keeper for her second goal of the year. Salas was credited with her fifth assist of the season.
FDU outshot Stonehill 6-2 in the first half and led 2-0 after 45 minutes.
The Knights stayed aggressive in the second half and continued to put pressure on Stonehill's defense. They produced eight more shots but could not find the back of the net. Fortunately, they held Stonehill to just two more shots and kept them out of the scoring column.
Rosemarie Leblanc picked up her sixth clean sheet of the year. The freshman now leads the NEC in shutouts.
