Salisbury, M.D.- After taking the first two games in dramatic fashion, FDU dropped the third game of a highly-competitive series against UMES by a score of 5-4 on Sunday. The loss drops the Knights' record to 28-17-1 (18-9) with just one conference-series to go.
After falling behind early, the Knights wasted no time getting back into this game. A pair of singles from
Hunter D'Amato and
Justin Sierra in the second inning put things in motion and eventually,
Luke Cantwell and
Brelon Harden put balls in play to earn RBIs, which tied the game at 2-2.
The Hawks' offense quickly answered the bell. They plated two more runs in their half of the second. Yet again, the Knights responded immediately. This time it was
Franklin Gomez Jr. crossing home plate on a double-steal. This drew the deficit to 4-3 entering the bottom of the third inning.
Brendan Medoro entered the game out of the bullpen in the second inning and delivered a magnificent effort. The Hawks were able to manage one run off of the right-hander in the third but that was all Medoro would surrender. He finished the game on the mound for the Knights going 6.1 IP allowing just the one run on two hits.
Trailing 5-3 in the seventh,
Luke Cantwell attempted to spark the Knights' offense. He mashed a solo homerun to centerfield for his 14
th bomb of the season. Cantwell now sits one homerun shy of the FDU single-season record.
UMES finally called upon their pen in the eighth inning to get the final six outs. They worked two-straight 1-2-3 innings to secure the 5-4 victory for the Hawks.
FDU will conclude NEC regular season play and their home schedule next weekend against Merrimack. The three-game set kicks off Friday, May 12 at 3pm in Teaneck. Senior day for the Knights will be celebrated on Saturday at 1pm. Catch all the action on NEC Front Row.
