Box Score QUEENS, N.Y. - FDU traveled across the George Washington Bridge in hopes to get revenge over the St. John's Red Storm. Last Wednesday the Red Storm visited Naimoli Family Baseball Complex and got the best of the Knights in a 19-5 victory. This time around FDU got the best of St. John's in a thrilling 7-6 victory in the 10th inning.
The story of the game was the starting pitchers of both teams; the Knights did not allow the Red Storm to record a hit until seventh inning.
Nicholas Mazzotta got the start for the Burgundy and Blue and put together one of his best performances of the season; he threw 4.2 no-hit innings with six strikeouts.
Patrick Gardner relieved Mazzotta with the no-hitter still intact as he was able to stifle the Red Storm batters until they picked up a hit to lead off the seventh inning. Gardner finished his outing only allowing one hit in 3.1 innings while keeping the shutout in tact and holding onto the lead.
The Knights offense broke through in the top of the fifth when two-way freshman Jermey Cheeseman doubled home
Hunter D'Amato to break the scoreless tie. FDU proceeded to secure insurance runs in the sixth and ninth innings. The sixth inning run came about when Anthony Chiapetta reached base on an error and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly from
Tom Ruscitti. While leading 2-0 in the ninth
Luke Cantwell singled for his third hit of the game which allowed
Brian Sanders to score and push the Knights lead to 3-0 heading into the bottom of the ninth inning.
Things got interesting when
Brendan Medoro came on for the save in the ninth; he recorded two quick strikeouts before allowing four straight hits that helped the Red Storm tie the game at three and push the game to extra innings. The FDU offense stayed resilient and bounced back in the top of the tenth inning with a four-run outburst to put the Knights back in front by a score of 7-3. The scoring was led by
Zack Will, Ruscitti, and D'Amato who all drove in runs on back-to-back-to-back singles. Medoro was once again faced with the task of picking up the final three outs to secure the win for his team. After a leadoff single was followed up by a two-run home run head coach
Manny Roman switched to
Grant Goodlad out of the 'pen to seal the win for the Knights. Despite two walks Goodlad settled down and was able to pick up the final three outs to secure the Knights a 7-6 win.
FDU will be back in action this weekend when they travel to CCSU in a battle for the top spot of the conference.
