TEANECK, N.J. - FDU picked up their third series sweep of the season with a 9-4 victory over the Norfolk State Spartans on Sunday afternoon. The story of the game was the Knights pitchers only allowing one hit on the day. The offense raked as usual as they picked up nine runs on eleven hits to win their 24th game of the season.
Tom Ruscitti got the Knights on the board early as he picked up his first of three doubles on the day in the first inning to drive in
George Rosales and give them a 1-0 lead. The FDU lead was extended in the third inning when
Brian Sanders blasted a two-run home run over the left center wall to move the lead to 3-0; this was back-to-back games that Sanders deposited a ball over the outfield wall. A fourth run was picked up in the inning when
Brelon Harden legged out an infield single with
Hunter D'Amato on third base to put the Spartans in a four run deficit.
Ethan Rembish got the start for the Knights and came out of the gate blazing putting down NSU hitters; he went 15 up and 15 down to begin the game. The top of the six inning started with Rembish throwing a perfect game before that was quickly over after a popup to center field was lost in the sun and dropped to put a runner on base for the first time all game. The Knights starter struck out the next batter and forced a groundout to record two outs in the inning before things unraveled. A walked batter and hit by pitch loaded the bases with two away for Justin Journette of the Spartans. Journette drilled a ball over the right center wall to tie the ballgame at four apiece and ruin the no-hitter. Despite putting up four runs in the game NSU failed to pick up a second hit on the day when
Brendan Medoro and
Grant Goodlad gave FDU three no-hit innings to seal the victory.
After the Spartans tied the game in the sixth the Knights offense refused to back down by scoring five runs in the seventh and eighth innings to pick up a 9-4 lead. The back-to-back big innings saw the Knights blast two home runs sandwiched in between two
Justin Sierra base hits that drove in runs and extend the Knights lead. The first home run came in the seventh when
Luke Cantwell hit his NEC league leading 12th home run that was then followed up by
George Rosales who blasted a solo home run in the eighth inning.
The Knights third baseman D'Amato failed to record a hit in today's contest, however, he picked up a walk which helped him extend his on-base streak to 36 games and counting. Wednesday afternoon FDU fans will be able to see if D'Amato can extend that on-base streak one more game as they take on the St. John's Red Storm at 3 p.m. at Jack Kaiser Stadium.
