FAIRFIELD, CT - FDU and Sacred Heart battled it out in Sunday's rubber match to see who would be victorious in the season series. They Knights did not get a good performance on the mound and dropped the contest 10-5 and saw they season record fall to 21-12-1.
The game started off strong for the Knights who three runs in the first two innings of play off of the Pioneer starting pitcher. The SHU defense produced the first Knights run when the shortstop dropped a
Brian Sanders popup that allowed
Joan Sosa to score the games first run. FDU extended their lead to three in the second inning when
TJ Werner and Sosa hit back-to-back sacrifice flies to score
Luke Cantwell and
Brelon Harden.
Knights starter
Ethan Rembish cruised through the first two innings before getting roughed up in the third. The Pioneer offense was able to put up seven runs in the inning to take a 7-3 lead and knock Rembish out of the game. He final line read as three innings, seven hits and seven runs while walking four batters; his record dropped to 1-2 on the season.
Patrick Gardner relieved Rembish to begin the fourth inning and he was able to keep the SHU bats at bay while only allowing one run over three innings on the mound. Despite Gardner's solid performance out of the 'pen the Knights offense could not get going as they stayed scoreless between the third and seventh innings.
The Pioneers extended their lead in the seventh inning to 10-3 when Joey Skarad homered and Zach Kovalchik singled through the left side. FDU tried to crawl back with a pair of home runs in the eighth and ninth innings when Sosa and
Hunter D'Amato hit solo home runs to cut the deficit to 10-5. However, the comeback attempt was short lived as the Knights could not put together a rally and they dropped the rubber match by a final score of 10-5.
After 15 days away from Naimoli Family Baseball Complex the Knights will be back on their home field on the afternoon of April 19th at 3 p.m. as they host the St. John's Red Storm. The midweek will be the first matchup of these two programs before FDU travels to Queens, N.Y. on April 26 to face off against the Red Storm for the concluding matchup of their two game set.
