JERSEY CITY, N.J. - The Knights (20-10-1) traveled the short trip to Jersey City to take on Saint Peter's (4-26). Heading into the matchup FDU was on an eight game winning streak while the Peacocks had only won two games all season. However, the Knights met their match for the day and surrendered the contest 23-18. The high scoring affair saw the teams battle it out on the offensive side while each squad struggled to pitch and field the the ball. The midweek matchup lived up to its name and featured 43 runs, 33 hits, 18 walks, and eight errors.
Headlining the game was
Justin Sierra who was one stolen base away from breaking the FDU All-Time stolen base record; in the fourth inning after he singled to center field Sierra swiped his 79th career base on a two balls and zero strikes count to break the program record.
The Knights and Peacocks battled it out for the first five innings with FDU even holding onto a 11-6 lead at one point. The game got started with
Brian Sanders and
Hunter D'Amato each doubling in a run to give the Burgundy and Blue and early 2-0 lead. The FDU lead was extended in the third inning when
Luke Cantwell blasted his 10th home run of the season to take a 3-1 lead.
Saint Peter's struck back and took a 6-4 lead in the bottom of the third inning only before the Knights responded with seven runs in the fourth and fifth inning to take a commanding 11-6 advantage. The bottom of the fifth inning was disastrous for the Knights when they surrendered 10 runs to see the Peacocks take a 16-11 lead. The deficit was too much for the Knights to overcome and despite scoring seven more runs themselves they relinquished seven runs to Saint Peter's and could not complete a comeback.
The FDU offense had a big day despite the loss as they saw seven hitters have two or more hits on the day with Sanders leading the bunch with a perfect 4-for-4 on the day. D'Amato was able to extend his on-base streak to 29 games with three hits while driving in three runs and Sierra drove in fours runs on two hits.
The Knights will travel to Sacred Heart for a conference battle this weekend beginning on Friday at 3pm.
