Huge 7th Inning Rally Propels the Knights to a Mid-Week Win Over Siena

TEANECK, N.J. - The FDU Knights were back at home after a weekend series in Maryland to host the Siena Saints in a non-conference midweek clash. The Knights entered the game with a 12-9-1 record while the Saints have struggled with only two wins and 21 losses. Both teams struggled on the mound and saw their offenses battle it out to a score of 12-10 in which the Knights came out victorious.

how it happened

There was at least one run scored in six of the first seven innings and FDU took advantage by taking an early 2-0 lead in the first inning when Hunter D'Amato doubled into the left-center gap to drive in Brian Sanders and Joan Sosa. The Knights did not let up as they tacked on three more runs in the second inning to extend their lead to 5-1. The 3rd inning was when things became tumultuous for the Knights when starting pitcher Nicholas Mazzotta surrendered a two-run home run to Danny Babero to cut down the lead to 5-3. FDU was able to gain one more run in the 3rd on a Zack Will sacrifice fly before Siena's offense exploded for seven runs in the middle innings.

The top of the 4th inning saw Aiden Stewart crush a grand slam for the Saints before they were able to post three more runs in the 6th inning off of Knights relievers. Brendan Medoro was called on in a bases loaded two outs situation in the top of the 6th and he produced a backwards K to end the inning and get the Knights out of the jam. The FDU offense was silent in the bottom of the 6th inning before Medoro returned to the mound of the 7th inning. He got into a jam of his own by loading the bases with no one out but not before first baseman Jeremy Cheeseman and catcher Anthony Chiappetta rolled a beautiful double play to cut down the Saints runners; Medoro got the next batter to fly out and end the inning and eventually was awarded with his third win of the season.

The bottom of the 7th inning treated the Knights well as they put up six runs to overcome the Saints lead and take a 12-10 lead of their own. The inning was kick started by center fielder Justin Sierra who singled and immediately stole his 17th bag of the season. Patient at bats and smart base running inched FDU closer to the comeback when Zack Will doubled in Sierra and D'Amato singled home Will. The first-year player Chiappetta came to the plate with a runner in scoring position when he blasted his fourth hit of the game to right field to tie the game at 10-10.

The comeback was completed by TJ Werner who entered the game the prior inning; he jumped on a pitch from Noah Rodriguez and deposited the ball into the left field gap to drive home Cheeseman and Chiappetta. Evan Stewart came on to record the final six outs in the game and he did just that by pitching two scoreless innings and facing the minimum of six batters.

The Knights will be back in action this weekend when they play host to Delaware State in a conference battle. Games will take place Friday through Sunday; game one will be at 3 p.m. with the two weekend games happening at 1 p.m. All the action this weekend can be watched on NEC Front Row and followed on Twitter with live updates @FDUKnightsBASE.
