HAMILTON, N.J. - No. 15 FDU was led by top-10 individual performances by sophomore
Allysha Howard and seniors
Julianna Spina and
Cameron Spring as the Knights finished the New Jersey Open, hosted by (RV) Monmouth, 10-3 as the 2023 Northeast Conference Regular Season Champions sit 68-37 overall. The Knights finished the went on an eight-match win streak, including a redemption ranked victory over No. 24 Morgan State after falling to the Bears on the first day of the three-day event.
Howard finished first overall, earning the lefty Most Valuable Player honors with a total traditional pinfall of 1,374 - an average of 229.0 a match. Spina earned a slot on the All-Tournament Team, rounding-out the competition in seventh place with 1,272 sticks, averaging 212.0 in six bouts.
Among the highlights of the weekend,
Mike LoPresti's Knights came from behind to topple (RV) Monmouth in the semifinal, when FDU made a huge zone adjustment and equipment change, leading to winning the last three games to finish-off the Hawks 4-3 in Baker match play. Carrying momentum into the final, the Knights bested Morgan State in a 4-0 sweep to clinch the team title in the second-to-last meet of the regular season.
Going 3-2 on the opening day, FDU tallied wins over Adelphi and No. 13 (DII/III) Saint Anselm before falling to Wagner by seven and the No. 24 Bears. Moving to the middle day of games, FDU won five-straight before emerging victory in the final three for an 8-0 run to close the event.
