Staten Island, N.Y.- In a pivotal matchup between two teams positioned in the upper half of the NEC table, the FDU Knights (6-10)(6-2) clashed with the Wagner Seahawks (7-7-2)(5-4). The match was marked by a series of tense moments, yet it was Katia Càrdaba's exceptional performance in the second half that proved to be the turning point. With two moments of sheer brilliance, Càrdaba propelled the Knights to a well-deserved victory.
1st Half
The Knights faced a challenging start, allowing Wagner to capitalize on their initial sluggishness. In the 14' Jess Maraia seized the opportunity by connecting with a long ball and expertly placing it past
Marie Jakobsen.
This goal served as a wake-up call for the Knights, sparking their offensive prowess. Following this setback, the Knights regrouped and dominated the game registering the next four shots in the match all of which were on target.
FDU's most promising chance of the half materialized in the 32' courtesy of Katia Càrdaba. She unleashed a first-time shot from outside the box however Wagner's goalkeeper pulled off an incredible save, denying FDU a crucial equalizer. Despite the setback, the Knights' spirited response showcased their determination while setting the stage for an intense match.
2nd Half
In the second half FDU showcased a vastly improved performance, taking control of possession and asserting their dominance over the match.
The pivotal moment arrived in the 63' when Katia Càrdaba won possession in Wagner's final third. With precise control she took a single touch before confidently finishing the ball into the net. A stroke of fortune came in the form of a slight deflection off a Wagner defender, propelling Càrdaba's shot into the back of the net.
In the 66' Càrdaba once again displayed her exceptional talent, winning the ball in Wagner's final third. With individual brilliance and skill, she expertly maneuvered past defenders and skillfully placed the ball into the bottom right corner of the net. Despite the pressure from two defenders closing in, Càrdaba's composure ensured a clinical finish solidifying the Knights' lead.
As the match entered its final minute, Wagner made a desperate push to find the equalizer. Their efforts seemed to pay off when they scored from a corner; however, the goal was disallowed due to an offside player obstructing the goalie during the play. This turn of events secured the Knights' victory, marking their fifth consecutive triumph.
"I think Wagner gave us all we could handle today and put us under a lot of pressure. For us, it is about continuing to learn how to win different styles of matches." Coach Teepe Continued, "Katia came thorough when it mattered most, she has the confidence and ability to make those types of plays and today she made it happen which was great to see."
The Knights head to Le Moyne on Sunday, 10/22 as they look to keep the momentum rolling as NEC playoffs get closer.
