BRONX, NY. - In match one of the second day of the Rose Hill Classic, FDU women's volleyball (2-3) rolled past Niagara (2-4) 3-0. In the second match, Penn (1-2) secured a four-set win over the Burgundy and Blue (2-4).
Match 1 vs. Niagara
Set 1
- FDU jumped out to a 9-2 lead and didn't look back, opening the match with a 25-20 set win.
- FDU had great energy throughout with strong offense. Kylie Nott led the way in the first set putting down 6 kills on a .750 clip followed by Tatijana Fucka (5 kills) and Sofia Rampazzo (4 kills 3 Aces).
Set 2
- The Knights needed extra points after Niagara made a furious comeback after trailing 24-19. Following the set being tied at 24, back-to-back kills by Nott and Anaya Prince put the Purple Eagles away.
- Rampazzo added 6 more kills and 6 digs.
Set 3
- The Knights took charge and went on a 18-1 run solidifying the victory with a 25-8 set win.
- During the run Rampazzo had 4 aces and Fucka dominated the miiddle.
- Rampazzo achieved her 4th double-double in her 5th match with the Knights (11 kills and 10 digs).
- Nott tied Rampazzo for kills this match with 11 and earning 2 aces.
Match 2 vs. Penn
Set 1
- Set 1 was a point-for-point battle that saw the set tied at 11 before Penn would be able to break away with a 6-1 run, putting the Knights on their heels 25-20.
- Rampazzo hit .267 with 7 kills leading FDU.
Set 2
- Penn opened the set with a quick 7-2 lead thanks to several attack errors by FDU and quality serves by the Quakers.
- The Burgundy and Blue battled back to tie the set at 10 with Giorgia Vaschetti and Vittoria Bertoli putting down a couple kills.
- Penn then answered with an 8-2 run to separate the teams for good and win the set 25-17.
Set 3
- Following a couple strategic changes coming out of the break and getting bigger in the middle the Knights were able to control the set easily 25-14.
- Tessa Fisk made an immediate impact with a kill and block early in the set.
- MacKenzy Ruggiero was a force at the net defensively with 4 blocks.
Set 4
- In the final set the Quakers took the early lead and played well enough to extend it late in the set and defeat FDU 25-18.
- Nott led the way to try and keep FDU in it with 4 kills, with Fucka and Fisk adding 2 kills each.
"Today was a perfect example of how great we can play and how new our team still is," stated Coach
David Nguyen. "It is still early In the season, and I have no doubt we will be able to figure it out, but we need to stay patient with our process."
On Tuesday, the Knights travel to Newark, NJ to take on NJIT at the Wellness and Events Center at 7 PM.
