Washington, D.C.- The FDU Women's soccer team (2-7-0) opened NEC play today, September 15th at 5PM against Howard (0-6-1). The team was able to secure a 3-1 win and open conference play with the perfect start.
1st Half
- The first half of the game was tightly played with both sides getting shots on goal FDU had six and Howard had 5.
- In the 45' with 11 seconds left on the clock junior Franziska Theus netted her third goal of the season assisted by sophomore Kiomy Luperon that boosted the confidence of FDU.
- Malene Nielsen faced five shots on target in the half, but the efforts were not enough to beat Nielsen who made all five saves.
2nd Half
- Up a goal, FDU found confidence in their game with great attacking and defending in the half.
- In the 49' FDU doubled their lead with a goal from sophomore Aitana Martínez-Montoya which was assisted by graduate student Madelyn Robbins.
- The Knights found their third goal in the 83' off a penalty that Montoya was able to score for her second goal of the game and fourth of the season.
- Howard was able to find a breakthrough in the 87' off a goal from Rachel Asare.
- FDU recorded 12 shots in the period and only faced 3.
"It turned out to be a great team victory, we were in control of the ball for long periods in the game and really benefited from the goal we scored at the end of the first half." Stated head coach Eric Teepe. "It was the perfect start to NEC play, we've been battling many things but this win shows what we are really capable of"
FDU continues conference play on the road in Loretto, Pa. against Saint Francis U September 22nd at 2PM. After the perfect start to NEC play, the Knights will look to keep the ball rolling with a win next week. The game will be broadcast live on NEC Front Row where you can watch the game live.
