Men's Soccer Battles Army to 1-1 Draw, Aided by Gomez's Second Score of the Season

TEANECK, N.J. - With the side's second first half goal of the season giving them the early advantage, FDU men's soccer (1-0-1) battled to 1-1 draw with Army (1-0-1) Monday night at University Stadium in Teaneck.

How It Happened

First Half
  • Junior forward Tony Gomez was hungry for his second goal of the season right from the jump, dropping a ball down the center in the 3', though it was saved by the Black Knights' keeper Josh Taylor.
  • Gomez would get his score almost 10 minutes later when the Santander, Spain native had the ultimate 'heads-up' play after graduate student midfielder Fallou Tounkara's penalty attempt was stopped by Taylor. Combining with fifth-year Joshua Ferreira, who earned his second assist of the season, the Knights took a 1-0 advantage.
  • With both sides sharing possession throughout the opening period, Army tallied their first shot-on-target in the 16' though it was no match for senior Spencer King who logged four saves this evening in net for Seth Roland's side.
  • After a barrage of substitutions on the part of the away side, Gomez yet again tried to lace one in though this attempt was high and to the right of the goal.
  • FDU out-shot the Black Knights 10-3 in the first 45 minutes.
Second Half
  • Roland made a quintet of substitutions coming out of the break looking to maintain the offensive power his club demonstrated in the first.
  • Senior midfielder Jordan Alonge got the offense going for the Burgundy and Blue on their home ground in the second half with a shot that was wide right of the target.
  • Army would level the tally in the 49', nearly two minutes after the Alonge attempt, with Brandon Bryant scoring for the Black Knights.
  • Both sides went deep into their bench with a host of substitutions coming at the midway point of the period which induced numerous shots for Army, though both sides would officially log seven shots in the final 45'.
  • In the 70', Army's Justin McStay was sent-off with a second yellow card, resulting in the referee showing red, giving FDU a one-man advantage down the stretch.
  • The reigning NEC Rookie of the Year Gomez could have made it 2-1 in favor of the home side in front of the Knights faithful in the 80' though Taylor made the stop, his fifth of the night and lone save in the second half.

Of Note
  • FDU has emerged victorious in three of the last four meetings with the Black Knights with tonight's draw being the lone non-FDU victory.
  • Graduate student and Teaneck product D'Shon DeGannes earned his first FDU start, one of five Knights to play the full 90. DeGannes tallied three shots, with two coming on-goal in the bout.

Quotable

"I thought that we were flat tonight," said Roland. "I think we traded what should have been a win for a tie because this was a game we surely should have won; but we were flat. I thought Tony and Josh had a heads-up play, following up the PK save. I thought that was good to see."

The Road Ahead

FDU hits the road for a two-match road trip to Maryland where the Knights are slated to take-on Navy on Friday, September 2 at 7 p.m. and UMBC on Sunday, September 4 with kickoff also scheduled for 7 p.m.
