CHARLOTTE, N.C. - FDU men's volleyball (6-15) battled Limestone (18-9) in the opening round of the Independent Volleyball Association Championship on Friday morning, falling in straight sets.
It was Rui Fernandes and Jack Lydon who paced the Knights with a combined 14 points as Fernandes filled the stat line with three solo blocks, two service aces, three kills and 13 assists.Â

The Saints dominated in set one, hitting 12 kills on a .688 clip to take the set 25-10.

FDU held a two-point edge early in set two until a 7-1 run by the Saints forced a lead change. Artem Vetrov and Mihajlo Rodic each added a pair of kills, but it was not enough to close the gap as the Knights fell 26-16 in the set.

Fernandes opened scoring with a service ace in set three as Limestone jumped out to a 6-3 advantage. As the Saints began to extend their lead, the Knights took off on a five-point run with back-to-back kills by Lorenzo Bonomo to get within a two-point defecit. However it was a final pair of points by the Saints that would seal the final set in their favor, 25-21.

The Knights will face Alderson Broaddus for the third match this season at 4:30 p.m. in match two of the IVA Tournament hosted by Queens.
