Baseball Shuts Down Manhattan in Game One, 6-4

TEANECK, N.J. -Junior infielder Tommy Verga hit a three-run homer and powered the Fairleigh Dickinson baseball team (2-7, 0-0 NEC) to a 6-4 victory in their series opener against Manhattan (1-7, 0-0 MAAC) on Friday afternoon. 

How it happened 

  • Manhattan led 4-0 after three innings.  
  • In the bottom of the fourth, Justin Sierra scored off a sac fly by Edward Novoa to make it 4-1. 
  • The Knights cut the deficit in the bottom of the fifth inning after a pair of runs with a single to right field hit from Sierra, making it 4-3. 
  • Graduate student right-hander Nick Evangelista provided the Knights with their longest start of the season by lasting 6.2 innings. Evangelista allowed four runs on ten hits and struck out three. Brendan Medoro took the mound in the top of the seventh and earned the win. 
  • Tommy Verga, who finished 3-for-4 with three RIBs and one run scored, hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the seventh to give the Knights the lead, 6-4. 

Inside the box 

  • Justin Sierra went 3-for-4 with a double and collected two RBIs. 
  • TJ Werner hit a double, going 1-4 with two runs, and a walk. 
  • Tom Ruscitti went 3-for-4 and recorded a stolen base. 
  • Hunter D'Amato collected one hit. 
  • Medoro struck out two in 2.1 innings pitched.

Next up
The Knights return to the Naimoli Family Baseball Complex for game two of the series. The first pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
