FLUSHING, N.Y. - The Fairleigh Dickinson women's tennis team (5-6, 1-1 NEC) swept the St. Francis Terriers (1-9, 0-3 NEC) 7-0 Tuesday afternoon at the USTA National Tennis Center.
The Knights started off with a bang in doubles competition, with the No. 3 team of graduate student Marta Bettinelli and sophomore Gauri Bhagia taking the win over St. Francis' Gayathri Rajesh and Valentine Mudry, 6-o. In the No. 1 spot, freshman Namie Isago and junior Alena Kubanova defeated Angelica Karlsson and Lincy Valencia, 6-4. Falling short to the Terriers in court two was junior Shreya Gulia and senior Smriti Singh to Margherita Florio and Julia Vavarigos, 7-6.
To start singles playing in the No. 5 spot Bhagia battled and defeated Yeva Baziv in straight-sets, 6-0, 6-1. Senior Aishwarya Gandotra swept Gayathri Rajesh in the No. 6 spot, 6-2, 6-2. Singh followed suit as she defeated Florio in the No. 3 spot, 6-4, 6-0. Kubanova competed in the No. 2 spot against St. Francis' Mia Skrbinsek and won 6-2, 6-0. Gulia competed at the No. 1 spot and won, 6-3, 6-4. Rounding out singles play was Bettinelli at the No. 4 spot and defeating Valencia in a super tiebreaker in lieu of a third set, 7-6, 4-6, 10-3.
Up next, the Knights will come home and face Sacred Heart on Tuesday, March 29 at 1 p.m.
