TEANECK, N.J. -The Fairleigh Dickinson baseball team (4-14, 0-0 NEC) earned a doubleheader split against UMASS (5-5-1, 0-0 A10), dropping the opener 5-2 and winning game two 5-4 on a seven-inning game Friday at Naimoli Family Baseball Complex.
How it happened
Game One: UMASS 5, FDU 2
- The Minutemen opened the scoring with a home run in the second inning.
- After three scoreless innings, UMASS hit a two-run homer to make the score 3-0 in the top of the sixth.
- Moving on to the next inning, the Minutemen extended their lead 5-0 with two more runs.
- Tom Ruscitti came home off a Zack Will's single before Tommy Verga touched home plate from a single to right field by George Rosales in the bottom of the seventh. FDU closed out the game and finished with a loss of 5-2.
- Nick Evangelista picked up the loss for the Knights, allowing nine hits, five runs, one walk, and striking out four in seven innings of work. Phillip Romeo came up to close the game, going two innings, not allowing any run, walking one, and recording two strikeouts.
- Will went 3-for-4 and registered a double while Ruscitti added two hits.
Game two: UMASS 4, FDU 5
- The Minutemen led the first two innings with a home run and a run scored on a double to left field.
- The Knights responded with a five-run inning to take the lead, 5-2. Will hit a double to right field, allowing Jack Giovenco and Luke Cantwell to score the first two runs of the inning. Later in the inning, Will scored on a wild pitch. Justin Sierra and Tom Ruscitti scored two runs on a balk to cap the scoring at five for the Knights.
- UMASS hit two home runs in the top of the seven, but it was not enough to catch up to FDU.
- Joey Kosowsky received the win, throwing 6.1 innings, allowing eight hits, four runs, and striking out seven. Brendan Medoro came in to close out the game on the mound.
- Sierra and Ruscitti each registered a stolen base.
- Will went 1-for-3 with one run and two RBIs.
