AUSTIN, T.X. - FDU battled against AVCA No. 14 Stanford (6-2) before falling in three sets to end day 1 of the First Point Volleyball Collegiate Challenge presented by Ogio. The Knights (0-4) held leads in each of the final 2 sets as they competed for the second time of the day against a top-20 opponent.
How It Happened:
1st set:
- Freshman Artem Vetrov got the Knights first kill of the match off a Stanford block
- Stanford opened the set on a 6-3 run
- Freshman Jack Lydon had his first kill of the match to bring the Knights within 2 at 7-5. Another Lydon kill later in the set kept the deficit at 2 at 12-10.
- Vetrov kept FDUÂ within striking distance with his 5th kill of the set
- Teams would trade points the rest of the set resulting in Stanford taking the set 25-20
- Vetrov finished the set with 7 kills and a .400 hitting percentage
2nd Set:
- Graduate student Rui Fernandes earned the first ace on the day to open a 2-0 lead for the Burgundy and Blue
- FDU would earn a 6-5 lead after some crafty play at the net from sophomore Santiago La Jara and Fernades
- Lydon drilled a kill down the middle to put the Knights back up 10-9
- A 4-0 run highlighted by several aces by the Cardinal put FDU down 17-12
- Vetrov put another kill down after an FDU timeout to stop the run
- Stanford went on a 8-3 spurt to close the set 25-16
3rd Set:
- Vetrov would start the set strong with 2 kills out of the first 5 points for FDU as the score was tied at 6
- Fernandes second ace of the match would give the Knights an early 7-6 lead
- Lydon continued his strong play with several kills and ace to put the Knights back up 13-12
- Stanford would gain advantage on a 6-0 run to take a 18-13 lead and not look back
- Following a Lydon kill off a Stanford block, the Cardinal regained momentum and closed the match winning the set 25-16
- The set had 11 ties and 4 lead changes throughout
Inside the Box Score:
- Vetrov led the way with 11 kills, tied with Stanford's Kevin Lamp for most in the match
- Lydon added 9 kills in the match, 8 of which came after the first set
- Fernandes had 20 assists and led the Knights with 7 digs
