NEWARK, N.J. -The Fairleigh Dickinson women's tennis team (1-2, 0-0 NEC) dropped its matchup against the NJIT Highlanders (2-2, 0-0 ASUN) 6-1 Friday night at the Naimoli Tennis Center.
The match began with doubles play. Sophomore Gauri Bhagia and junior Shreya Gulia won by default at No. 3. In the No. 1 spot, graduate student Marta Bettinelli and senior Aleksandra Vorozheikina dropped their match to Aya El Sayed and Sandra Dzhambazov, 6-1. The Highlanders followed with a victory in the No. 2 spot as Amira Badavvi and Soleta Dubimon defeated the Knights' junior Alena Kubanova and freshmen Namie Isago, 7-5, to take the doubles point.
In singles action, NJIT won five of six matches. Bettinelli took home the lone point for the Knights in No. 6 spot by default. At No.1, Gulia fell in straight sets to El Sayed, 0-6, 0-6 and Vorozheikina dropped her match at No. 2 to Budiman, 4-6, 3-6. Salvi led wire-to-wire at No. 4, defeating junior Amina Lasheen 6-4, 6-4. Kubanova and Namie lost in two sets in the No. 3 and No. 5 positions respectively.
Up next, FDU will go on the road to take on St. John's next Friday, Feb 18 at 8:30 a.m. at the USTA National Tennis Center.
