DANBURY, Conn. - Five FDU student-athletes earned All-ECAC honors this fall with two players each from men's and women's soccer and one women's volleyball player earning postseason accolades from the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC).
Hugo Bacharach (MSOC) and
Aitana Martínez-Montoya (WSOC) each earned a slot on the First Team All-ECAC while
Lea Egner (WSOC),
Tatijana Fucka (WVB) and
Spencer King (MSOC) were named to the Second Team. Martínez-Montoya was also named the ECAC's Women's Soccer Offensive Player of the Year.
From Knights men's soccer, junior defender Bacharach, the NEC Defensive Player of the Year, earns a slot on the First Team All-ECAC accompanied by senior goalkeeper
Spencer King on the Second Team. Bacharach continued to make his presence known on the pitch as the second Knight to be named NEC Defensive Player of the Year. The Benicassim, Spain product and six-foot-four defender earned his third-straight slot on the First Team All-NEC following his heroics in 1,182 minutes over 14 contests in 2022. Bacharach logged seven points by way of three goals and one assist, including two beautiful headers off corner set pieces in non-conference bouts against UMBC and Wake Forest, both on the road. A key part of the FDU defense, Bacharach played the full 90 in all but three games this season.
King did not allow a single goal in NEC play this season. Recording an overall record of 7-4-3 with eight shutouts in 2022, King came off the field with nine clean sheets and ranks 31st in Division I in goals against average (.810). In conference play, the keeper from Ottawa, Ontario, Canada led the NEC in saves with a perfect save percentage and 22 stops in league games, along with shutouts per game and goals against average which was a remarkable .000. King recorded a year-best five saves in the Knights' NEC opener at Sacred Heart on September 25 and recorded three or more saves in all but two matches played. Over 14 games, King faced 141 shots with a total of 47 saves, the most of any Knight since Jahmali Waite made 79 in the 2019 season - the year in which Waite's stop in penalty kicks secured the NEC title and a trip to the NCAA Championship.
The back-to-back NEC Offensive Player of the Year, women's soccer sophomore forward Martínez-Montoya was the league's Golden Boot winner this season, sparking the attack for the Knights, netting 44 percent of the team's goals in 2022. Martinez-Montoya scored 12 - including 10 against NEC opponents, coupled with two assists for a total 26 statistical points which was enough to earn her second-straight slot on the First Team All-NEC. In the 2022 campaign, Martínez-Montoya played in all but one game making 20 starts for a total of 1,572 minutes of work. In addition to earning a slot on the First Team All-ECAC, the Fuenlabrada, Madrid, Spain native garnered the added distinction of being named the ECAC's Offensive Player of the Year.
Graduate student midfielder Egner made a remarkable comeback from injury to play in 17 fixtures with 16 starts and over 1,200 minutes of playing time. Egner followed Martínez-Montoya in the box score with four goals this season (nine career goals in five campaigns) and a team-high three assists. Hailing from Oberboihingen, Germany, Egner scored two game-winners this year including a conference victory against LIU.
Helping secure FDU's first NEC women's volleyball crown, Fucka, a middle blocker transfer from the UAB, was named First Team All-NEC after she ended her first regular season with the Knights having scored 265 points with 2.76 points per set, put down 210 kills this season with 2.19 kills per set and had 89 blocks this season with .93 blocks per set. Fucka finished the regular season fourth in the league in hitting percentage (.308), blocks (89) and blocks-per-set with 0.93.
