The Knights Take Down the Highlanders for the Seventh Straight Meeting Between These Two Schools

NEWARK, N.J. -  The FDU Knights (6-2, 0-0) women's basketball team faced off against the NJIT Highlanders (4-4, 0-0) in a battle of New Jersey foes. The Knights followed up their big win over UMES with a huge first-half against NJIT. The Knights came out and hit eight threes, including three from Celia Carbonell, and forced 11 turnovers in the half to be up 44-18 at halftime. FDU sustained their lead throughout the second half but did struggle at times to defend and score the ball. The third quarter saw the Highlanders outscore the Knights 20-9 where they hit their first seven shots from the field and cut the lead to 14 at one point. The Knights played strong the rest of the way matching the Highlanders with 14 points apiece in the fourth quarter to hold off the NJIT comeback. A big factor in the Knights win over NJIT was they out-rebounded them 44-to-27 and had 19 offensive rebounds. The Burgundy and Blue extended their win streak to three games with the 67-52 win.  
 
Statistical Leaders
  • Chloe Wilson led the scoring for the Knights with 15 points and six rebounds.
  • Senior Sierra DeAngelo posted her first double-double of the year with 14 points and 12 rebounds, including five offensive.
  • Carbonell was a huge factor in the big first half with 10 points and shooting 3-of-5 from three in the contest.
First Quarter

FDU 17, NJIT 8
  • Threes from Forgues, DeAngelo, and Wilson gave the Knights a 9-0 lead.
  • FDU lead 13-2 at the media timeout behind three three-points and five forced turnovers.
  • The quarter concluded with the Knights winning 17-8 led by seven Wilson points.
  • They forced seven turnovers, hit three three-pointers, and shot 41.2% from the field in the first quarter.
Second Quarter

FDU 44, NJIT 18
  • The Knights drilled three more threes in the first 3:30 of the quarter to force a Highlanders timeout. The Knights led 28-12. Conklin, Fajardo, and Carbonell got in on the scoring.
  • Carbonell drilled another three to extend the Knights lead passed 20 points.
  • The Knights outscored the Highlanders 27-10 in the quarter led behind nine points from Carbonell.
  • FDU forced 11 first-half turnovers and shot 8-of-14 from three in the half.
Third Quarter

FDU 53, NJIT 38
  • The Highlanders forced a quick FDU timeout when they cut the lead back down to 20 points at the 6:41 mark.
  • At the media timeout, NJIT was on a 12-4 run and cut the lead down to 18. FDU led 48-30.
  • With 2:37 remaining NJIT was on a 17-4 run before Fajardo drilled a three for the Knights.
  • NJIT won the quarter 20-9 but the Knights hit timely shots to hold onto a 15-point lead.
Fourth Quarter

FDU 67, NJIT 52
  • Referees called a quick media timeout due to an extended injury from NJIT. The Knights led 53-40.
  • The Knights faced adversity in the fourth as well but stood strong on the offensive end to tie the Highlanders 14-14.
  • FDU forced four turnovers down the stretch and hit free throws when they needed to seal the game versus the Highlanders.
